Opeth is not mediocre, just bad. I've only heard one case of them writing a coherent track (Leper Affinity). And even then, barely.

It depends on what you expect. If you're expecting death metal, you're not going to get that from Opeth, but if you like progressive metal/rock, you'll get that from Opeth, and you might like it (if you're into that stuff). I like progressive rock/metal bands, so I think Opeth is decent. I liked their last album, and I think the next album they will eventually make, will be okay.

I think this is because of the way we use the prog tag today...most metal bands get the prog tag for being meandering, disjointed, poor imitations of good '70s prog rock bands even if bands like Burzum or Demilich were really more progressive in spirit.
