I've been told by more than one person that it is very easy to get press credentials at shows so that you can get up close to the stage to get great pictures. I've been told it's very easy to fake it.

Anyone ever done this, or more importantly, know how to go about doing it?

I sometimes do a photoshoot, its not that easy...:(

You usually mail the label of the band you want, with few examples of pics you took, the promise they get them for free... etc... its easiest if you work for a magazine.

Yeah, it ususally isn't too easy. I get in to shows because I'm a radio DJ and a music journalist, but there's a lot of bullshit you have to wade through...the hardest part is usually getting the right phone numbers. Sometimes, they make you fax requests on letterhead, proving that you're part of some company/station, blah blah blah.

I got into the Irving Plaza show that way, though :) It can't hurt for you to try, though, Mr. Niel. Just call and act professional...of course, it all depends on how *big* the band is. If they're relatively small or independent, most labels will be happy to hook you up...they'll do anything they can for promo.

I got press passes for Opeth in Montreal and Toronto, allowing me to bring my camera inside and take photos. It was not easy, though - took a lot of work, sending all the necessary emails, phone calls, and making sure you have the credentials. You usually need to be part of a newspaper or magazine (websites sometimes work too) that will run a review on the show. Letting the band have free access to your photos is a huge help. Also, make sure you put together a portfolio of some kind so they can see your work.

All in all, it ain't easy, but you can do it. Send an email to their record label in the country where the shows are (for North America, this would be KOCH Music - http://www.kochent.com), be persistent about it, and you'll get the passes.
