I brought up the idea of bringing back true gladiatorial combat in a serious way in the course of an online conversation.
It was suggested that it be used as a prison reform method to control overcrowding and speed up the death-row process.
The upside is that it would be completely voluntary on the part of the prisoner, and supported by Pay Per View, the funds of course going partially to the broadcasters and mostly to the prison.
Like the ancient gladiator arena, it would have both deathmatches and non-lethal combat, the deathmatches of course being reserved for those on Death Row.
This is only the premise of the discussion that was had. We discussed incentives for the prisoners to participate, as well as the pros and cons of allowing such a system. It was generally thought (by us anyway) that it would be far more beneficial than not.
I submit it for discussion here.
