Just a weird mix I was contemplating would sound pretty good, anyone got any recs? Heavy on the 70's, please.

The new Cynic probably qualifies.

Also: Psychotic Waltz?

And Ozric Tentacles, but they're not really that metal..

Exivious?

Spastic Ink?

I'll check out those threads, I'm really trying hard to find music with strong metal elements, but the feel and guitar work of 70's progressive mixed with instruments and occasional solos of jazz. Very specific, there's a chance it hasn't been done.

Not too sure about the Cynic. Crazy fucking coincidence, I came across Ozric Tentacles just earlier today and dug them a whole lot from what I heard off a random playlist. They're not what I'm trying to find with this though. I'll check out those other ones.

haha im currently listening to a band called Embryo (jazz fusion/krautrock thing). It's not metal but you might dig it

As for more metal oriented bands, Ved Buens Ende/Virus are always my go-to for that weird jazzy metal.

You might try Barren Earth. Not super psychedelic, but they combine 70's prog rock and metal.

Skip to 2 minutes in to hear the prog rock bit.

Ne Obliviscaris is a great combo of jazzy violin and metal, but there's nothing 70's about them except maybe how experimental they are. Still, you might like them.

All great recs gents, I dug and filed all these albums for my later listening pleasure. That older Cynic had a leg up on the other shit for sure, lack of vocals I don't like helped

Maudlin was close... if I could find a band basically like that, only with lower production value and a bit more of for instance the guitar tones of 'All Along the Watchtower' it would be dead on.

Great recs regardless, I mark this thread a success and will check out links after I've drank up the full albums of these songs.

Ion Dissonance?
They have elements of jazz but are kinda "core-ish". Still awesome though.

Too bad about the vocals on Hail Spirit Noir... I was really digging it, too. Don't like those growls with it though I'd prefer either instrumental or very muted quiet tones.

Neurotica, neither was what I'm looking for. Check out some of the things other people posted on there, I'm kinda going for 'barely' metal but still heavy enough to qualify.
