The band that created the greatest heavy metal concept album ever (Operation Mindcrime) VS the band that created the worst (Streets: A Rock Opera)

Savatage is just one of those bands that that makes me want to do violent, terrible things whenever i hear their pompous melodramatic cheese-rock.

Ok....

Streets is a fuckin' classic, Oliva shreds both Degarmo and Wilton to pieces and Savatage has been more consistent.

That being said, I don't think the two are anything alike or comparable. Besides, I am on a HUGE Queensryche kick as of late and I haven't pulled out the 'Tage in some time. But I have both band's entire catalog, for the most part and they are both quentessential to metal history.

How so? There are mutual fans of both bands for sure...

Savatage's best doesn't match Queensryche's best. At the same time, Savatage's worst is not even close to Queensryche's worst.

If you're a fan of both, it all depends on how you rank it - do you go on which band has the best album(s), or which band is more consistent?

Queensryche most definately. I do like Dead Winter Dead by Savatage. The rest is way too powermetalish for my ears. And since I am a musical barbarian I am prejudiced against powermetal.

Well, no not really 'power metal' per se, but it did all get a bit pompous and theatrical. At times I'm not even sure whether I'm listening to Savatage or Trans Siberian Orchestra on some of their latter albums. Once Criss died, and Jon lost interest, they started to slide down the slippery slope, but there are still moments of greatness.

BUT, fucking hell -- "Hall of the Mountain King" and "Gutter Ballet" are phenomenal heavy metal releases.

Can't wait to see them at ProgPower this weekend. This will be my first time ever...geez, it's weird to have been listening to a band for over 10 years and only now getting round to seeing them.

Al Pitrelli's guitar solo at the end of "Turns to Me" rules. I bet this was the selling point for Mustaine...it sounds like a Megadeth solo, heh.

Looking up some info on Al Pitrelli led me to Van Helsing's Curse. Has anybody heard this "Oculus Infernum"...?
