Question:2

Are Protein Shakes really worth all that damn money?

Not if you're purchasing a pre-made shake. You can make a much better shake at home for a fraction of the price. Just buy the powder, blend it up with a bunch of fruits and frozen yogurt, and thar you be.

Yeah I meant the powder. Like Weigh and whatnot. Good for bulking up more?

No. If you need to, get a good protein powder but make sure you doa little research on your own first. Normally it's never good to rely too much on shakes and supplements but a good protein powder adds much needed calories and protein to a meal if you're trying to bulk up. That being said, make sure you're drinking plenty of water and exercise to flush that excess protein from your system.

Fruits and yogurt? That'd be ok but not as a Post Workout Meal. You don't want ANY fat in that, just lots of protein and some carbs to go directly into your body ASAP.

No... bulking up has nothing to do with protein in the sense that eating lots of protein without any kind of plan will do nothing than fuck up your kidneys... Protein is meant to be used to build muscle. If you want a good PWM, research some. Lots of studies suggest a lot of complicated dextrose/caffeine/whatever mixtures. That is a lot of scientific shit and can get expensive, all you really need is a good routine full of compound exercises and the proper nutrition throughout the day. Bulking up is hard shit dude, just have to eat a lot of good stuff, and work hard to try and ensure the most amount calories you ingest are turned into muscle and not fat (although you will obviously gain a lot of fat)... it's something you'll need to do a lot of research on your own to understand fully or just hire a personal trainer.

My suggestion is read this book (http://rapidshare.com/files/121796184/Burn_The_Fat_Feed_The_Muscle_-_Tom_Venuto.rar) and then follow that routine for a month unless you're already been lifting for a month straight then move onto a proper split routine, maybe trying starting strength. Eat a lot of lean protein with every meal, use the powder if you need an extra calorie boost but just buying powder alone will do nothing unless you have the knowledge and a good plan behind it. I mean you can do it blindly but you'll just get minimal gains and they probably won't be sustainable, if you're gonna work out better to work out smart.

people seem to think fat and calories is a bad thing, but when you're working out, your body burns them more, hence your body needs more. If you're trying to loose weight, fine, work out and keep the cals to a low. But if you're trying to build muscle mass or body mass, you NEED to ingest fats and cals. Good ones, like fruits and yogurt.

I said after a workout no fat, because there is like a period of time after your workout that everything in your body (muscles, etc) is primed and ready to accept certain things. Giving it these much ended nutrients ensures maximum gains. Fat interferes with the process.

If you're trying to gain weight you're godamned right you need a lot of good fats like poly and monounsaturated. Fuckin' A. And you need calorie overload, you need to eat like 1000+ calories above your maintenance.

try to get in 1 gram of protein and 3 grams of carbs per pound of your body weight everyday. (this isn't written in stone, it's just a guideline)

i eat 6 meals a day, each meal has 30 grams of protein and 60-90 grams of carbs. most people dont realise how imoprtant carbs are for growth, protein is worthless without them.

the benefit of drinking a protein shake instead of eating real food is that it's quickly digested and easy to prepare. there are only two times in the day where you require quick protein and carbs:

1.when you wake up, you've gone a whole night without any food and you need something to feed your muscles asap

2.and after a workout, your body is looking to replenish the energy spent during the workout. don't have a protein shake alone though, make sure you take in a lot of quick carbs too, i mix maltodextrin and/or dextrose (fruit sugar) with water.. if you don't have that eat a cup of raisins

my max bench is 120kg now :kickass:

30 grams per meal? Well if you're bulking up that's good but MAKE SURE YOU DRINK PLENTY OF WATER I CANNOT STRESS HOW IMPORTANT WATER IS! P.S. John he is right, although I'm trying to LOSE weight so I don't eat first thing in the morning, I do an hour of cardio right away before I go catabolic (state which your body breaks up muscle for energy and store fat when it doesn't get food) so I don't have to burn through my glycogen reserve and go straight to fat burning. If you're not doing that, eating something in the morning ASAP is important to prevent you from going catabolic. Also, eat 5-6 (preferably 6) small meals a day.

I use BSN products. Syntha-6 and TruMass. They work, I drink three shakes a day, a gallon of water and nothing but eggs, chicken breast, fish, whole wheat pasta/rice/bread. They are best consumed once you wake up, after your workout, and right before bed. Other than that, you can get 30 grams of protein from like 2 eggs and a can of tuna.

It's just expensive to keep buying powder ya know. been lifting for 5 years and finally figured out the system that works on my own. remember, it's a supplement, not a replacement for real food. when it's most important, you consume it. But the side effects suck, you get nasty protein farts. I even hear girls in the gym ripping some nasty ones. fuck man

Edit: I do eat redmeat lol. Top round beef is the leanest and that has creatine in it. Also for something special, go with lamb. It's high in Carnitine.

Top round is the only red meat I eat too  Fucking delicious! I eat chicken breast... but mostly salmon, tuna and sardines religiously  It's so much cheaper. The bolded statement couldn't be more true.

if you're gonna drink a protein shake before sleep make sure it's casein (usually labeled "nighttime"). Casein is a slow release protein that will feed your body through most of the night. i can't afford it so i eat cottage cheese, tastes like ass though
