Question about studio monitors - Yamaha HS80m

I have two Event TR5s that are crapping out on me, so I'll probably end up getting a check from the warranty people soon.

I went to Guitar Center to look around and talked to one guy about the studio monitors. I mentioned to him that I had read on this forum that the KRK V8's seemed to be the choice and that I shouldn't go with a speaker smaller than 8 inches.

He mentioned that while the KRK V8's are really nice, he personally likes the Yamaha HS80M ESPECIALLY for rock and metal.

He told me that for something that needs that high end and mid's the Yamaha would work.

This would only make me think that these monitors are not flat. From my understanding you want to get monitors that are as flat as you can get them, and treat the room that they're in.

Not only that, but with the music I play, I won't play JUST Rock and Metal, I'll play just about everything.

So, my question is whether or not the guy at GC is an idiot (which I don't doubt it) or if it's not a bad choice.

Also, if you have any other suggestions for monitors that are at least 8 inches and decently priced, I'd appreciate it a lot!

Thanks!

I use the V8's...... They work great....Did they have one of those setups there where you can compare the monitors? I know when I bought my V8's the Guitar Center guy was trying to push me on the Yamaha's and I think they sounded sub-par to the KRK's.....

I had a grunt at my local GC hook up the various new Yamaha's for me and used some random ass cd there that had floyd, a7x, metallica, norah jones, yada on it.

Those new Yammy's are fucking awful.

Then I auditioned the Dynaudio BM5A's and shat my pants.

KRK V8's are very nice, imo.. can't go wrong with em. However, if you can afford the 1 grand for the Dynaudio's they are a clear winner.

eeek, 1 grand is a little steep lol.

Yeah, they had some V8s there, but it wasn't hooked up to the same computer so I wasn't able to listen to the same tracks on them.

I said they sounded decent to please him but I didnt feel enough bass definition.

If your G.C. is anything like the 3 near me, the pro audio/studio room is in a permanent state of fuct-itis. Nothing is ever hooked up properly if at all, so I take it upon myself to plug things in and hook shit up...

I did not like the new Yamaha monitors at all. V8's are pretty doap, you'd definitely be happy with 'em.

gguy - you posted while i was posting.... differences would appear to be enclosure shape, upgrade crossover network, more efficient amp etc:

"In addition, V Series 2 monitors feature several key design elements that have made KRK sounds a "studio standard," these include radiused edges for improved imaging and slotted ports that greatly reduce distortion caused by port turbulence. What's more, we've included some valuable and practical enhancements like a speaker protection circuit for added confidence, an auto on/off feature for improved convenience and upgraded driver and amplifier components to ensure peak performance in even the most demanding professional environments."

sweet, I guess I know what kind of monitors to get now.

Now I need to figure out what kind of audio interface I should get heh.
I'm planning on using CakeWalk Sonar and I want something good, but not overpriced.

I'm debating on getting something you can daisy chain so I can record drums and stuff if I ever needed to...but most of those are quite pricey...
