Question for all metal guitarists or bassists

I write and record at the same time so, as I'm usually making metal, I usually write with distortion, for the guitar anyway. Bass usually clean but I normally do that afterwards and it's often just a case of padding things out so there's not really much 'writing' involved.

I also write and record at the same time, so I use distortion, in less I'm playing a clean line.

i dont think get the question. ..
but i usually write directly to Sibelius or Guitar Pro or whatever.
i dont like to play or hold any instrument when writing

I think its good to do both, which I do, because the sound youre working with influences you to play differently. And the point is, you want to come up with different ideas.

I write using tab software. I usually tab everything out in Powertab or Guitar Pro first, write the bass, anywhere from one to three guitars, and drums. I decide beforehand whether I want a part to be distorted or acoustic.

I never really liked writing stuff by sitting around and playing a guitar. I mean, you come up with some cool riffs and things, but I find that, for me at least, it's easier to put thought into these things when it's just me and a computer.
