Question for Andy...

You know, that's one of my favorite things about Andy. He, more than anyone, made me realize how much of the results are due to the talent of the person and how secondary all the gear is. It's so easy to get caught up in the gear mentality...I mean I love good gear, don't get me wrong. But I like how Andy kinda flies in the face of all that snobbery: 57s. ADATs. Soundcraft. 44.1. Finalizer.
It just goes to show that if you have the EARS and know what you are doing, you can get good results no matter what you're using (within reason). Great gear helps, but the ears and the knowledge are what it's all about.
Bingo.

Hey James!

Let me first say I'm a huge fan of your playing and I own almost everything you've been involved with.

I'm also a die-hard DP user and I'm loving 4.5. I've had far less bugs than in 4.12 actually, and the new features have given it a total edge over Pro Tools for anything IMO. Any time I have to work in Pro Tools it feels like a downgrade after using DP.

hi Kazrog.. thanks for the nod, i appreciate it. yeah, i've been hearing the same as you're saying about the 4.5 update... it's the 4.51 update that's apparently causing some issues for some users... i'm holding out mostly because i'm in the middle of a big project and i never do major upgrades while i'm in the middle of working on something.

thanks again, take care.

Do the Doobie Brothers feel the same way too?

To get back to the SRC thing. I think you guys just need to do a simple tracking and mixing project where you do one at 44.1, one at 48 and one at 96. Put down a little acoustic guitar and bass to a drum machine. Or anything. Make sure you record it really nice with your best preamps, etc.

It will take you an hour to do all three and listen back for yourself. It seems silly that there is a way to improve the sound of your projects and you would not do it out of lazyness. HD space? Who cares? I can get 400 gigs for 400 bucks now. Plug in compatabillity, well that could be an issue. And compatabillity with other studios, well that could be an issue too. So you would have to use 96k depending on what you need out of your project. But 48k is standard so I dont see a reason not to use it. Roger Nichols of Steely Dan fame also will not use 96k. He thinks its not worth the added hassle. But he is convinced that 48k is vastly superior to 44.1 and the guys that master his stuff have no problem with the conversion.

Two Against Nature was recorded at 48k and mastered digitally then SRC'd at the end. Sounds incredible.

By the way I agree that your talent far outweighs any gear or src or whatever.

I have posted a minute or so of audio that was recorded and mixed down to 96k. What I have posted in UN MASTERED. Also is just from a demo. But I ran it through my z-sys SRC box and converted it to 44.1 You can hear exactly what medium-high grad SRC'ing does to audio. Or at least death metal audio.

It does not prove what a mix would sound like fully recorded at 44.1 compared to one recorded at 96k but you can hear what kind of shrinkage you can expect from the SRC process.

go to: ftp://imperialmastering.zftp.com/

enter user name: src#imperialmastering.zftp.com
enter password vile

You will find the files there. You need to change the sample rate of your output audio card to switch back and forth but you will hear what the conversion is like. Report back please...
