Hey Chris I've got a question for you. I have been a long time fan and I have recently decided to learn how to play the guitar. There are no instructors near my area. I would like to try to teach myself however I don't know where to start. The good news is I have about 15 yrs of piano experience to help me on this quest. I think you are one of the best guitar players of all time and I would be honored if you have any input you could pass along to me.
Good luck on your upcoming tours and my wife and I can't wait to meet you in Chicago in August with Megadeth!
Hope to hear from you.

Hey Jon,

thanks for the nice words. As for quality instruction, I would recommend getting online lessons, there are quite a few offering it these days (including myself when not on tour). Then I would go to youtube.com and look up the people who influence you and start learning what they have there. Go to ultimate guitar tabs and start learning songs that interest you. Along with that you can get instructional DVDs from beginner to advanced that will help. Most importantly try to find people to jam with. The cool thing is in this day and age there are so many resources to learn (almost anything) that one could do quite well if they have the drive.

Hope this helps, Chris.

Hey Chris,

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I'm sorry I haven't replied sooner. I've been checking out some videos online, instructional and private. My wife and I also met a Megafan about 4 months ago in St. Louis. He is in his own band, The Edge of Beyond, he has shown me some things. I'm at the point in my life where I'm ready to devote some time strictly for learning guitar. How do I go about scheduling a couple of online sessions with you? :worship:

I would like to learn a few types of genres including Rock, Blues, and Metal. Focusing primarily on Thrash Metal.

I've been checking out some guitars and which ones would you recommend? I currently own a Fender Squier and a Dean VMNT1. I've found that the Dean is difficult for me to palm mute because of my size, I'm 6'3". Maybe my technique is wrong or there are other things I could try.

Thanks again, I hope we can set up some lessons when you have the time.

Hey Jon,

at this point lessons will be difficult due to my touring schedule, but stay vigilant, there are a lot of ways to learn. As for the guitar I would say the Dean should suit you better due to the fact that it is built around the style of music you like and the squire is an inexpensive guitar, however I can't say for sure without seeing them side by side. As for the palm muting it should be doable on either the only thing I could see messing things up is the volume knobs.

Take care, Chris.
