Question for Trapped...

Trapped, I'm curious. What do you like about Opeth?

I'm a big fan of the acoustics...

Opeth aren't too big on heavy riffs, they mainly go for the distorted minor strum, and since i am a thrash/death-head, i have big qualms with the lack of 'riffs'.

I love mikael's voice, both clean and growled... Although the growl seems very forced on BWP, and the effects that they experimented with on BWP are hidously un-subtle... Good idea, but bad execution.

Still Life is perfect, i love this album, and it is in line with Megadeth's Rust In Peace, Metallica's ...And Justice For All, Death's Individual Thought Patterns, and Sepultura's Arise... Brilliant album... Although the phasing 'mistake', or Dat-skip whatever it was irritates me something chronic.

I like opeth alot actually, but where would this forum be without criticism?? Exactly... ONE person expressing truth about opeth on this forum, and wether or not you agree with me, you can't disagree with the flaws in opeth's mighty juggernaught.

Personally, i prefer riff-driven bands, like Politics-era Nevermore, Megadeth, Metallica, Sepultura, Death etc.... As i am a guitarist, opeth isnt terribly 'stimulating' in that department, but they never set out to be i don't beleive, and i can appreciate the moods and atmospheric qualities that the band acheives...

Well, i hope this cleared things up... If you want more detailed critisizm of the band... just ask me some more...

Also check out my opeth page on www.librariusmetallicus.com, it's not completed yet, as i have no computer to do so at the moment, but you get the jist...

Fair point. Its your preferance.

Yes, the vocals do seem a bit forced on BWP. This point becomes clearer when I hear a live recording of The Leper Affinity.
disagree about the effects however. To me, they seem well meshed in the background and don't detract from the overall sound. Its kind of like another layers been added. Fair point however, if you don't like that layer.

Ok. But I'm curious, most bands have at least one flaw...and you can't tell me Metallica, Sepultura and Megadeth don't. I'm wondering whether these bands recieve the same treatment from you as Opeth on their respective boards...given your greater appreciation for riff-driven bands. And in what way do you define your term juggernaught in this case? The overall greatness of the music? or record sales? You couldn't say Opeth has sold as many records as Sepultura...or Metallica...or Megadeth.

anyway, cheers for the reply.
