Questions about bass guitar. (And Jim Sheppard)

I'm buying a 5 string bass next week. Was thinking for the Peavey Millenium or Ibanez GSR, but those have single coils. Do I need humbuckers for metal bass? What constitutes metal bass? Do they even use any gain?

I really like Jim's tone on Politics of Ecstasy. Is that just a lot of treble? Was he using gain perhaps?

Any and all advice is welcome, I'm only going to have around $250 to spend. I'll buy an amp for it next month.

Kind of a shame how Jim sort of faded out over the albums. He went from prominent and having great lines to almost disappearing.
