I've been thinking of selling my 5150 since I just can't justify having it right now, so i'm the market for a decent pre so that I can run it trough impuses, and the rm4 seems pretty cool, any thoughts on it? has anyone used it for any decent recordings?
I know Michael Wagener loves it, and AILD used it, but has anyone here used it? It gets a lot of praise in other forums

Recorded a guys raandall rm100 head a few times and thought it sounded great. Would totally recommend at least trying one out. Though cheap these are not

I used to have an RM4 and ran it through a Mesa 2:90. Cool little preamp, but for the price, I'd much rather just buy an RM100 head.

The secret lies in the modules, and if I did it again, I would buy a bunch of modded ones, rather than the stock ones, which I thought were kinda bland and didn't have much to write home about. The Salvation mods I've heard are AMAZING, but they're also very expensive :(

The Rm100 goes very cheap on ebay..I´ve seen a lot around the $600 mark...the Rm4 is a lot more expensive, tho´

Yep. You can get the RM100s loaded for around that price, the RM4s are about $200 more than that, and you still have to buy a preamp. Hell, I've seen the RM100s go for as low as $400 loaded. The RM100 is also cool, because you can put any combination of power tubes in it that you want. You might get one less channel, but honestly, I found it hard to find a purpose to using 4 channels, even 3 is pushing it for me. Plus, if it's just being used for studio use, you can just swap in new modules on the fly and have as many different sounds as you want.

I can't say enough good things about the MTS series. Check out the Randall Forums Rigs And Tones subforum, plus the Module subforum for plenty of killer clips.

love the concept and digging the sound, especially modded ones, found one on ebay 3 years ago
700€ inclusive case, footswitch, loaded with 3 modded modules and 2 stock ones and a randall 2x12
cab with vintage 30s and the internet connection at my parents home fucked up...one of the worst
days of my life.

The rm100 seems cool, but i'm not looking for a head, and I have the chance to buy the rm4 locally. I'm mainly interested in using it with impulses, the salvation soundclick clips were direct recorded and sounded nice.
Has anyone here used it with impulses??? the randall forum has some clips, but everything is very amateur'ish

There are plenty of people who have done Impulse work on it (crankyrayhanky does some IR work, but as you said, it's not near the quality of say, Mike Plas or Salvation's clips). I really don't care for IR's because there's no sense of speakers responding to dynamics or air being pushed, but I would imagine the MTS modular system should work beautifully with them. Plus, it's a minimal investment if you want a new tone!

"Hmmm... I think I'll look for a Framus Cobra.... Hell, none used and these things are $3400.... OH WOW! Knock off that 3 for a Mamba :D"
