Ok, I was going to post this a week or 2 back but I've been busy lately.

Anyway, quick rundown:

Drums are 100 % REAL....Pearl Export series kit. SM57 on snare top/all 3 toms, SM58 Beta on snare bottom, Beta52A on Kick, and C02 Overheads. There is slight EQ and compression on just about everything, and I think I ran this thru the Master Bus. Also Parallel compression.

This is my very first full song I have ever edited using Reapers slip edit feature. It took me a pretty long time as I learned from my mistakes and had to re-do a lot of it.

Please let me know what you think and any pointers towards tweaking to make this sound a bit better. I know it's not a full mix, but maybe someone can chime in and help me get these raw drums sounding a bit better.

Also, I noticed weird issues....like near the end there is a break where a sample is going to go to fill in the gap....the last flam-type snare hit gets a weird "CRACK" thing going on. I've noticed this a few times in 7 songs and I can't quite pin down what is happening.....Maybe he barely whacked the mic?

Thanks for listening.

Kick is pretty good imo. But I think you should re-do the snare.. sounds very dark and muddy to me...

Sounds pretty good, but as mentioned, kick needs more work. Sounds quite cardboardy

Also, have you done any panning? Sounds really centered to me

Yeah the kick is always my weak point. I have it HP'd and a bump around 10khz for attack but it may need a sample blended.

Snare sounds nice but I agree it seems sorta bassy or muddy.

Nothing is panned, sorry about that. The toms are peaking about where the kick and snare are, but they do seem a bit buried. Maybe I need to do a bit of tweaking there as well? No Slate for me....I'm poor!

Thank you guys for your input.

Ok guys, so I checked out the session again and there are a few things I'm sort of clueless on.

1. Snare sounds bassy/muddy.....yet I'm high passed pretty far as it is and boosting the treble end on both snares, AND the snare bus. Maybe it's just his snares natural tone? We tightened the fuck out of it....

2. Kick.....HP'd about 50hz with a mid cut and boosted about 3khz for attack....I'm thinking about using drumtrigger and blending a sample a little with the kick.

We had some issues with tracking and punching in (this is my second attempt at recording my entire band) and we recently have a new bassist trying out for us that seems to know his shit recording-wise, so I think we may try to work with him and see what he can offer. Big learning experience yet again.

Give that kick another boost around 8kHz and it'll get a bit slappier. Where abouts are you cutting the mid in that kick?

Snare sound like it needs a fair bit of work. What's the EQ look like on the snare?

pretty sure the kick mid-cut is around 1k, and kinda wide. the snare....essh.....HP'd to about 150, about a -2db cut at about 1.8khz, and a wide boost of about +6db at about 8khz.

Take the cut on the kick down to somewhere between 300Hz and 600Hz. Should get rid of more of that boxy sound.

I'd probably get rid of that 1.8kHz cut on the snare and add a boost around 2-2.5kHz. Narrow off that 6k boost a wee bit too.

YMMV

Thanks a lot man! I might want to mention that I do NOT have monitors so I've been tweaking through Shure headphones and our PA system at the jam space. It's rough, but it's really all I have to work with now. I'll mess with this some more.
