Well, crap. Somebody broke into my truck today and nabbed my iPod. Not exactly the disaster to end all disasters, but you folks can imagine......I mean, it is my main source of music on the go, and pretty much at home too.

The irony is that I the car was parked outside of a Buddhist center where I take classes, and on this particular day was volunteering to help clean up the place. This being the case, I just had to kind of say, "well, that's the way it rolls....." you know, such is life.

So, spending the rest of my holiday weekend essentially carless (they busted out the passenger window), and trying to plot a scheme to raise the cash for a new iPod, I really can't do without for too long.

For what it's worth, I have no thoughts of being singled out, nor do I have vengeful thoughts. Just, that's how it goes in the city is all......

Pardon my mild rant here, but figured some of you could relate.

Damn.

And yes, the music is all backed up on my computer (thankfully).

As a last aside, I pretty much saw the person who did it. I was finished for the day, and just had to run an errand a block away, so walked (having dropped the ipod in the car). This person passing me kind of turned around and for a second I thought, "That was a bit suspicious," and almost went back. Lesson learned. I would have called the cops, but I think you know how that goes.....just, not a lot of motivation to track down one iPod. And I wasn't positive it was this person, of course, so I had to give them the benefit of the doubt. It was kind of a rough looking street-type though, and she (yes, she) had a backpack....and I saw her two blocks down the road (after) kind of looking into cars. I'm sure it sounds like I should have done something....but imagine if I was wrong.

I suppose not all are Budda in nature. Sad that happened to you. costly to pay the deductable or replace the window, that will cost more than the Ipod. Will your insurance cover theft? As they say, what comes around goes around so hopefully they'll get their just dessert.

The deductable on the window is $250....but the glass guy said that it would probably cost less than that. So, fine. The iPod I'm not sure about yet. It is covered by my Renter's insurance actually, but I need to call the "team" that is in charge of that claim. I was just too tired to sit through another phone tree (seperate claims for theft and damaage). Anyway, my guess is that my renters insurance has a similarly large deductable, and the iPod costs $300, so chances are that's a bust.

Good quote on the "Buddah nature," thing though....as that's a term thrown around alot by the Lamas.

Ouch. Sorry to hear dude. I have an iPod and love the thing. One thing I've learned is to NEVER leave it in your car or lying around (I know this is sort of "too late") I always keep mine in my pocket or locker. Good thing you backed it all up on PC though, which was a very good idea.

I wish I remembered some of those old Kung Fu quotes to insert right about here. :hypno:

Shitty deal indeed. :erk: I got my tape deck stolen from my car twice in my life (one with the proverbial window smashed too), now I never left my car outside a paid parking lot if I can help it.
Neither I left valuable objects visible and my new tape deck has a detachable panel (so I religiously take it off).

Well at least nobody assaulted you, a guy was killed yesterday in a nearby city just to stole his car. When thieves want something no deterrent will stop them. So is always a gamble, I have to park in front of building where the girl I'm dating lives and I hate the place! Makes me paranoid while being there :hypno:

Better luck next time, keep your valuables closer and pray to Buddha to keep you out of harm. Material stuff can be replaced, life not.

The thing is, I take all my stuff out too. But, alas, I had one small errand to run, and knew I'd be gone only 10 minutes. It was 10 mintues too long.

So, heard from the insurance company, and the iPod is covered under Renter's Insurance, but with a deductible too big to make a difference. Ah well. Lesson learned is all. Nobody got hurt, that's the thing.

Sorry to hear your loss, Wiz. And you're much more gracious than I would be. I abhor theives. Rank them right up there with rapists and baby killers. But, like you said, what can you do when you don't know for sure who did it? I'd probably stew and steam over it for a long while, so I'm sure your way of dealing with it is much more healthy. :D

I too practice keeping everything out of site in my vehicle. I try to give the impression that there isn't even a stereo in it...no cds or covers laying around, nice speakers hidden behind stock faceplates, and detachable face on the stereo. Still, with all my care, there are times where I run short errands with cds laying on the seat. This reminds me to take more care about that. Lesson learned for us all.

I've got the solution : stick with a tape player like I do, nobody wants to steal it! :D Am I old school or what??

Joke aside, I'm sorry to hear your loss Wiz. Thieves are some of the weakest minds out there. It won't make their life better...

I'm too with a tape deck :D But one of my front speakers died on me, I just cross check it and it seems the speaker is not working even if it looks in perfect condition.

I will have to call tomorrow a guy to check it out and see if it can be repaired or will have to be replaced :erk:

Man, I am embarrassed to have switched exclusively to cds in 2002. Here it is 2007 and I find two guys still stomping around in animal skins and clubbing their women into submission. Way to hold on to the past guys!

I had to switch because a) I could no longer find albums on cassette and b) my computer is my stereo so I had no way of recording cds to TDK. I still have a huge box full of cassettes, but no way to play them. :erk: Slowly, but surely, I am replacing everything on cd or mp3...it's been a four-year transition and still isn't over yet.

Actually TSO, it's funny, but I've been mulling over making a complete switch to digital/MP3. I know this sounds absolutely insane to a lot of the folks here.....but I really don't have a lot of reason to keep CDs on hand anymore. The artwork, yes.....but then again what can't you find on the Internet these days?

I am actually considering very seriously taking all my CDs to the local Amoeba and trading in every last one....getting some cash, and some credit for more CDs (which I would again just trade in).

I'm still thinking about it, but for me it is just embracing the future, plus I have a few more personal reasons.....non-materialism and all that. Believe me, it's a big step, but I'm really thinking of doing it. Of course I would back everything up on an external hardrive, and all my stuff is already on my computer.

Again, to those who think I'm insane, it really is the wave of the future. It's hard to admit it, but CDs are dying. More and more I notice a poorer selection at Amoeba (one of the best record stores anywhere)....where they used to have everything by everybody....they now just have the latest releases by most metal bands, big names notwithstanding. Used to be when I got into a band I could go in there and peruse the whole collection....now, having gotten into Vanden Plas this year for instance, they have Christ O, and that's it.....

I'm telling ya, digital really is changing the face of things....and whether or not someone wants to be a diehard about it will make little difference in the next few years. I'm quite certain that less and less releases will be coming out on CD at all. Seriously...watch....it's coming.....

I'm not saing I like it....but I'm getting ready to embrace it, and anyway, my CDs are just taking up space. Yes, they are "important" to me, but really it's the music, and if I want to look at the cover-art for, say, Live After Death, I can easily find a high quality, much larger than CD-sized scan on the net.

I'll keep ya posted on whether i do this or not.....

I hate to agree with you, but you're right. CDs will probably cease to exist as a medium within the next ten years. Maybe sooner. Sure they'll continue as a 'nostalgia thing' (much the way that some vinyl copies of new albums are still made & released), but not much more than that.

Actually TSO, it's funny, but I've been mulling over making a complete switch to digital/MP3...
I'm right there with ya Wiz! My buddy and I were just discussing this issue on New Year's Eve. The cds are on their way out, it's just a matter of time. Brick and Morter stores will still exist in some capacity simply for the nostalgia and those who "collect" (and need something tangible to hold in their hands). But most will turn into Dollar Stores or Salvation Armys.

I would have already started my conversion to digital if I had a place to download albums without having to install iTunes software on my computer or pay a stupid monthly fee for the privilege of downloading albums for $10 apiece. I am a minimalist as well, my cds just keep hogging up more space and I really only use them in my truck. At home, all my cds are transferred to mp3s on my external hard drive...for easy access and no fiddling with jewel cases and cd trays.

My dream of the near future is being able to go to a website and "buy" an album for $10, get a high quality digital download of that album, along with hi-resolution jpg artwork of the cover and a text file containing all the lyrics. With that package, I have everything I'd have if I bought it on cd, but it would only be hogging up cyberspace, and not the receding space of my living room.

Digital/mp3 is the way of the future, and I'm going to embrace it much faster than I did cds. Bring it on, baby! I can't wait!

I certainly don't blame ya about not wanting iTunes. I actually like it, and use iPod of course, but one should have the choice of what program they play their music on to be sure. Thankfully, more and more iTunes downloads are including an "interactive booklet" which is generally speaking the album artwork and booklet in PDF format. Wolfmother and Operation Mindcrime II both came that way. Also, quite a few back catalogue albums are less than $10, which is nice. Oh, and they are starting to have things that are actually hard to find on CD, NWOBHM stuff for instance. They have some Witchfinder General albums....that kind of thing. All good ideas. I'd say give it a year or so and downloadable artwork will become the standards. Also, there are user created programs out there that let one do what they will with iTunes downloads....that is, put them on other MP3 players etc. Anyway, you can burn iTunes stuff if you want (on CD I mean) which is nice if one still needs a CD in the end.

Anyway, yeah, it's the wave of the future. It really started to hit me when I began to notice the falling quantity of selection at Amoeba. I was trading some CDs in there recently and told the guy at the counter that I was thinking of trading all my stuff in, and he said, "Take my advice, do it soon....what we pay is dropping weekly, and we are actually making plans for the online trend....." Just, interesting is all. If they have to adjust to make a go of it, then things are really changing.

Ha! I just bought a Witchfynder General cd yesterday...couldn't believe I found Friends of Hell in a cd store in Tempe!

The key for me on these legal downloads is I just want mp3s. I don't want to have to use some third-party software to play the albums. I just want to download mp3s and artwork and complete freedom to do as I wish with them (which means cataloging them onto my external and burning a cd for the truck). And I want to use MY software choice to do all that. That day is coming, but it's not here yet.

And you're right, record store owners better get with the times or they're gonna be out of business in a few years. Amoeba sounds like they are right on top of things. They're probably going to build an online store where you can purchase cds digitally.

Well I never buy original tapes, I record mine and if they damaged I replace them, so the CDs never leave my room.
That's how it started for me back in 2001. I had to buy an all-in-one stereo with cd and cassette deck so I could could record onto TDK for use in my truck. But once I bought a 6-disc changer in 2002, the cassettes fell by the wayside as the changer eliminated the need to change albums every 45 mins. By 2004, my cassette player had died from non-use and never was replaced.

I just had to buy a new stereo for the truck this summer, so it's going to be a few years before I can fully switch to digital. But that's okay, because I'm going to wait until mp3 stereos become more versatile than just playing an mp3 disc. In the meantime, I'll be downloading albums/artwork and then burning onto blank cd for the truck.

I'm in the same boat as you and Wyv, I still don't have a CD player in my car, which is a real drag when I buy new CDs. It does however give me a chance to give my old tapes a listen when I never would otherwise.

Thanks to the pod however I don't know if I'll ever get a CD player in my car.

Interesting we're having this conversation here, as Apple just announced Apple TV, which is a move in the direction of no more DVDs too....
