I had to record a guide track for our drummer today, and while I was at it I figured why not explore some tone ideas for the studio session we're having this month. I bought a Palmer daccapo reamp box recently and this is the first chance I've had to use it.

What do you like best out of A, B, C and D?

I'll reveal the variables in a few days. Only processing is normalising and a hi pass at 75hz, nothing else.

These won't be the final tracks, we'll be re-tracking everything at the studio with freshly strung guitars and the producer will very likely do a better job than I did with the tones.

For the hell of it, I recorded a solo option. It probably won't get used, but it was fun to do. This was done on a Les Paul with Burstbucker 3 bridge pickup. There are different tones on left and right.

EDIT - Added dropbox 320kbs mp3s of full guide track. They're normalised, the same ones I sent to my bandmates last night just with the equipment list removed. Normalising doesn't really help with the quality, but was the quickest way to make it a 'fair' listen, it should be a little bit cleaner than soundcloud.

Noramlly, in tone shootouts like these, one tone will jump out at me, but in this case I really couldn't decide which one I liked best. Honestly, I like them all.

I think they all sound harsh, digital if you will, somewhat "stiff".

Im not bashing, i just dont like that "quality" of the clips.

They dont sound like a real amp and cab to me.

Again, its a taste thing, no offense to OP.

I do like the riffs though. :D

Cheers for listening guys.

Firstly, thanks for saying you like the riffs!

No offense taken regarding the quality of the clips.

If it sucks it is either a) my fault or b) soundcloud's fault and it is likely a combination of both!

The idea isn't to pick the tracks we'll use though, just to pick the equipment to take with me to the studio. We're only recording this one song, so to keep it within budget we can't spend a whole day testing amp tones at the studio, hence why I'm playing about with things at home.

These correspond with A, B, C, D as per the soundcloud upload, and are the full guide track. I liked B the best, a little more definition in the chords in my opinion. I feel like with some EQ, it could sit pretty nicely in a mix.

Cheers for listening guys.

Let me be clear, i mean no disrespect, i dont even think my recordings sound better.

I just address the tone of the guitar sound. to me its harsh and stiff like most digital boxes are ( kemper/axe-fx ).

Im not claiming this is not real amps, but to me, it sounds like its one of the forementioned boxes or the likes.

Maybe when mixed and setup it can work.

Personally i would never use a sound that reminds me of NOt having a tube amp cranked.

I can work for you, im just judgemental and the fault and prejudice is on me.

hope you can take this as honesty even though it serves you in no way.

rock on :headbang:

So, for those interested.

Gear list -

Guitar: PRS SC, #7 Treble bridge pickup
Boost: Visual Sound 808 (TS808 clone)
Mics: SM57 on axis, e906 off axis normal setting, same positions and blend each time.

A - Blackstar S1 104 EL34 Super Crunch Channel -> Blackstar S1412B Cab (V30s)

B - Mesa Roadster CH4 Modern Recto Spongy - > EVH412 (EVH Greenbacks)

C - Blackstar S1 104EL34 Super Crunch Channel -> EVH412 (EVH Greenbacks)

D - Mesa Roadster CH4 Modern Recto Spongy -> Blackstar S1412B Cab (V30s)

First time dual micing a heavy tone, which was fun but I think I need to do a lot more experimenting. If anyone is interested I'll post up the full track when it is recorded and mixed. I'm not involved in the production side, just playing the guitars, so it should sound better :lol:

Cheers.
