These are songs, not albums:
Tristania:
Destination Departure
Bird
Cure

Switchblade Symphony:
Dissolve
Clown
Cocoon

Sopor Aeternus and the Ensemble of Shadows:
The House is Empty Now
No-one is There

Soundgarden:
Fell on Black Days (this was the song I was listening to when I learned my mother died)
Mailman
Black Hole Sun
4th of July

Nevermore:
Sell my Heart for Stones
Dead Heart in a Dead World
Passenger

I'd second Fell On Black Days and Black Hole Sun. That whole albums seems to drain the color from the world.
Pink Floyd: The Division Bell - after listening to that album you don't really know whether to be happy or sad.
November Rain by GNR works for some people, for others it does nothing

Why don't you check Sun0))?

you're an idiot. Danzig and Sunn 0))) are very depressive, because they lack music writing abilities. Its sad. Soooooo...I guess you can recommend those. Sorry for calling you an idiot.

My favs for sad songs (alot of agalloch :) )

agalloch - the misshapen steed
agalloch - odal
agalloch - a poem by yeats
agalloch - a desolatin song
angra - bleeding heart
daylight dies - dismantling devotion
my dying bride - for my fallen angel (its that good)
opeth - to bid you farewell
woods of ypres - a meeting place and time

I don't know if anyone mentioned Anathema's One Last Goodbye or not.
Very sad song yet so much emotion. One of my favorite Anathema songs actually.

my 89 year old grandmother passed away a few days ago and my whole family has been grieving.

so recommend away. try to stick to stuff I would like, so no flowery power metal or bad Gothenburg death.

W.A. Mozart- Masonic Funeral Music; Mass in C minor: Kyrie

Death in the Family - Type O negative
One of the gloomiest, dark, and straightforward songs by Type O.
The organwork in this song is truly chilling and haunting.
Try it if you've never heard it.
