Soul ... you might have caught me in the past talking about this relating to bands. As far as I am concenred there are so very few bands that have this in their music. Where it consistently comes through release after release, good or bad, but you just feel their heart in it.
It did not dawn on me for a long time, probably not until Jason Newsted joined them back in 2002, that Voivod is one of those few. A band where you can tell that the human bond between members is so strong on a personal level that only magic can come out of it musically. Then I realized that it might have been one of the very same reasons that Newsted joined them. He was coming from another place ... a diluted colder level and ended up in something real.
I know there is a lot of you, even the old schoolers here, that are totally unfamiliar with Voivod's music. understandably so, even back in the days they were literally so far ahead of their peers and played such unconventional style that it was not something easily digestible. Things were kind of simplistic back then, and they never comformed. Now also, as some of you know, this type of music is not something I normally like, but Voivod literally took over 10 years for me to appreciate. For some reason I always bought their newest releases, even though I cannot say that they always stayed in my player for long.
I am including a chronological listing with a song from every release, from 1984 on ... minus stuff from whem Snake left and Eric Forest took over on vocals. Not a bad period, and certainly more "thrashy" songs, but to me Snake is such a unique voice, that Voivod was really not the same without him.
The sequence of songs if you listen to them in the way I presented them, will give you an idea of their tremendous style change over the years, while remaining completely unique. Unmatahcbale in so many ways.
Long live the Warriors of Ice!!!
Enjoy!
