You know, I'm pretty grateful I put aside my bigotry and checked into Gojira and Isis. Otherwise I would have written them off just because I dislike most 'related' bands.

I guess you can never tell where the next surprise is coming from.

It's true though, you spend a godawful amount of time filtering through complete pigfodder but I guess that's just part and parcel of putting in the time to reap the rewards.

I don't really understand all the criticism levelled at people who dismiss bands without hearing them. You can't hear everything out there, and the process of selection necessitates deciding which bands are most worth checking out. This includes rejecting bands based sometimes on purely aesthetic features (i.e. when samples aren't readily available). So... maybe it's closeminded or whatever, but is it really hurting anyone?

Of course not, but then obviously speaking, you're not entitled to criticize the band you've never heard either. This all goes without saying though, so the discussion is moot. E.g:

J / Erik: Band X is SHIT!
Anon: What don't you like about Band X?
J / Erik: Can't say, I've never heard them.

Plus, I've discovered some of my favourite bands after being turned off of them by their stupid names and ignoring them for a long time because of that. I mean, come on, Hammers of Misfortune?

Deathspell Omega and Destroyer 666 (with umlaut of course) are two of my other faves. Especially DsO... hearing Si Monvmentvm for the first time was a huge slap in the face! i went in there expecting third rate bedroom black metal and look what i got!

i usually just dismiss them based on comparison bands or vocal style. cleanly sung vocals? move along, next please.

but seriously, i listened to hammers, nevermore, kayo dot, ect, so i can safely say they blow. (or are simply not my thing)

but then you get a revolutionary band lke Jesu, who is most definitely not my thing (wasn't even a big fan of Godflesh tbh) and they blow me away with their awsomeness and owning of 2005. so be it.

Good thing I was already a fan of MOTW before they mutated into Kayo Dot, otherwise I might have fallen into the same trap.
