Hi fellow producers,
I'm not a regular poster here but wanted to share something that I believe many of you would find valuable.
For those interested in metal production, our research project has created a free educational resource featuring world-class metal producers sharing their approaches to achieving heaviness in metal music.
What makes this project unique: For the first time ever, we've had eight renowned producers all mix the same track ("In Solitude"). This unprecedented approach allows you to directly compare different production philosophies and techniques applied to identical source material.
The Heaviness in Metal Music Production (HiMMP) project features:
- Exclusive interviews with Jens Bogren, Mike Exeter, Nolly Getgood, Josh Middleton, Fredrik Nordström, Buster Odeholm, Dave Otero, and Andrew Scheps discussing their conceptual and technical approaches to heaviness
- Detailed mixing documentaries showing their hands-on process with the same track
- Access to multitracks and all producer mixes for direct comparison and study
These resources offer practical insights into processing drums, guitars, bass, and vocals to achieve different flavours of heaviness across metal subgenres. Every technique is demonstrated with clear examples, and you can hear how different approaches affect the final result.
All materials are freely available at www.himmp.net, with videos hosted on our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@HiMMP-Research
What production techniques have you found most effective for creating heaviness in your mixes?
