I've read something like a Royer r121 is awesome (with a 57 or something) but no way am I spending like 1200. Any alternatives or quality royer wannabes? I've heard the Cascade Fathead is also great.

Cascade Fathead indeed, as well as the Nady ribbons apparently (though be sure to buy new because of the awful reliability), and for something in between dirt cheap and stratospheric, the Beyerdynamic M 160

Any particular Nady? I didn't think they would even have mics up to $500.

i would stay away from the cheap-o nadys...roughly 1/2 of them that make the trip from china show up with excessive ribbon sag, which renders them pretty much useless until you pay more than you paid for the mic to get it re-ribboned

I have a Fathead, two Trion 7000 and two R84s. I love Ribbons on heavy gtr tones... See Sig

IMO, key is balancing the Proximity Effect with the highs. Ribbons have a nice upper roll-off that at first will seem as a muffled tone but it is really an excellent EQ.

I checked the Trion 7000s for sag and did reduce the sag for one. I didn't find it made any difference worth the effort. Although I do sleep better now

I've considered adding a M160 but haven't pulled the trigger yet. Any other input to fuel my GAS.

I've got a t bone rb 100 that I really like. Far as I know t bone and nady ribbon mics are made in the same factory in china they're just branded differently.

I like my t bone on guitars and vocals, I like the way with distorted guitars its warm and rolls off the high end that I'd usually end up low passing out with a 57. Sometimes its a little muffled but if you mix it with a 57 you get the best of both worlds.

Man...now I really want a ribbon mic.

You bastards.

Have any of you guys heard anything about the Samson VR88? It's like 400 f'in $.

Yeah, I mentioned Nady because I had heard (here) that it was the American version of the T-bone our Euro cousins all seem to have such a collective boner for. Hopefully the slack ribbon thing would be covered under warranty, cuz I've read about that too!

And I would presume this is the particular Nady that's the relabled T-Bone:

Edit: Found some others, in ascending price order (and this thread should probably be moved to the Equipment sub-forum):

MXL 990
Electro Harmonix EH-R1
Beyerdynamic M 260 (for some reason cheaper than the M 160)

And the aforementioned Samson VR88

Dude, check the cascade site for all the comparison clips of the Fat Head vs. all kinds of shit. And the brown/gold setup makes me :notworthy
