You're on the right lines with number two, but it's not the gun itself nor the hammer... think about the 'in a tunnel of darkness' part... and bear in mind this is an old riddle - think six-shooters...

Nope - no. 2's the bullet itself - lies within the barrel 'tunnel of darkness' and needs pulling back by the hammer before it can be fired (or attack). No-one got any ideas for the other three?

I reckon number three might be frost. It forms at night, and then melts when the sun comes out.

Would number four be a bridge?
