riff rip-offs

Meh, that was really lame. Talk about a stretch.

EDIT: Listening to some of the other ones now, and holy shit that Darkthrone one has THE worst production I have ever heard.

And that Slayer/Borgir one was just pitiful. The only one so far worth mentioning was the Manowar/Bodom one, but then again Bodom have completely ripped off other riffs in the past.

^Man, my sister gave me Darkthrone's whole discography and told me to listen to it all. Usually I can handle bad production if the music is good, but the production really was that bad I couldn't get through more than half an album:erk:

...your sister listens to Darkthrone? :hypno:

There are 12 notes in western music. You do the math. Logically speaking, it's limited - Just as much as drum lines are.

Edit: Most of my female friends are into that kinda stuff. And they think Blind Guardian is gay.
Results of bad upbringing during their preteen days. Depression is a lethal weapon. Yeps, society stinks. Welcome to the 2nd millennium. :)

*Not saying I'm not a fan of Dark Throne, though. I fuckin love em :D*

I didn't think it was a stretch at all. But some of the other ones were...

I'm surprised he didn't include really obvious ones. Like that AILD song that sounds just like Metallica's "Blackened", or the Papa Roach song that sounds just like Caracass' "Death Certificate" etc
There are soo many better rip offs than the ones he posted.

+1 for coldplay/satch

About false rip offs, I had the experience. I wrote a song some times ago. We stopped the band, and my 2nd guitarist created another band with a female vocalist. She came one day with the cd of her friends. there was a song containing EXACTLY the same repeated 2bars riff as in my own song, there was only the last note that changed. The riff was basic but anyway that sort of coincidences are really possible !

haha, just imagining in my head lars and james listening to darkthrones land of the frost thinking, "hey! this sounds great, we could make a ballad out of this!"

In the case of the Excel/Metallica riff - I had a friend in college who was good friends with the Excel guys. Apparently, James and Kirk from Metallica (prior to the Black album) came to one of Excel's shows and were near the stage the entire time. The song in question was played at the show.

I don't see it as an exact ripoff, but I've always felt that Metallica's song was most likely inspired by the Excel song.

Even though Kirk demands he came up with it drunk at 3AM in a hotel room. Maybe he was listening to some Excel?

Either way, I don't think it really matters since there is almost nothing about the riffs I would consider similar, except for similar note choice and key. And if we are gonna go down that road...

That Carcass/Children of Bodom one is kinda funny, sounds as if they did copy it but disguised it with palm muting and stupid gay-ass keyboard orchestral hits like they always do.

but yeah, really most are probably not rip-offs at all, but pure coincidence. metal can be so one sided. I still love it
