RIP Mike Starr

How was his passing disrespected?
Believe me, considering this guy was a drug abuser, there are plenty of ways his death could have been "disrespected".
Maybe you are not speaking to me personally, but I feel like I am being attacked for making a statement in response to the original report, in naming him as the original bassist.

I am sorry for the way that this forum has disrespected the news of his passing.

Don't you think that's a bit of a overgeneralization? A handful of posters (and even that can be debated) does not equate to the majority of this forum. I understand your feelings. I just don't want to be misrepresented with a sweeping proclamation.

Jasonic, I WAS ABSOLUTELY NOT attacking your post. This is a general statement about how a life was lost, yet instead of taking the time to say something comforting to the survivors or a nice compliment about the deceased, some people want to focus on negative things, which you just did....... and I feel it is disrespectful. If you feel you need some rebuttal, I suggest a new thread or PM.

I once again apologize to the family and friends of Mike for the arrogance of this forum and wish you once again my blessings.

I wish the family and friends of Mark Starr all the best and my heart-felt condolences. I will not revisit this thread.

WOW!!!! Calm the f*ck down Aeonic......

My post was in response to the actual news report of this story, that stated Mike Starr to be their "original" bassist. I always thought it was Jim Sheppard that was...... Nothing more, nothing less.

I am more than aware that Sheppard did not play on any studio release.
I have seen the original AIC lineup live, and recall very well when they first came on the scene.

Maybe you are just taking it too personal, since you appear to be a big fan which is cool and all. I still think you reacted way too harsh to my comment, though I am not losing any sleep over it.

Sheppard was in the band for like 2 seconds before they got signed. His very brief involvement is only really something of a novelty to metal fans, because it was just that, brief. He never performed on any of their CDs and as far as I know, he never even performed on their demos when they were called "Alice N' Chains." Sheppard joined Sanctuary and then Nevermore, so I don't don't see how you could possibly think he'd have the time to be in one busy successful metal band, AND a multi-platinum rock band at the same time. That's why I figured you were just being a jerk.

So like I said, if it was a matter of ignorance, it's hard for me to give you a pass, but I suppose it doesn't really matter anyways. As for me calming down-- thanks, but I'm calm, I just thought your posts were dickish.

Dude, we are talking about AIC and Nevermore.
Not exactly two of my favorite bands.
I certainly did not bring any of this up to gain "cool" points.
I was making a statement based on my knowledge of these two bands.
It is your assessment that Jim's limited involvement in the band would not result in his being considered the "original" bassist if AIC.
I honestly could not care less.
It was not brought up to discount the passing of the dude, though I feel you took it as such.

STFU about it.

Some news:

Artisan News Service has posted an audio statement from Sgt. Shawn Josephson of the Salt Lake City Police Department regarding the passing of former ALICE IN CHAINS bassist Mike Starr. You can listen to it in the YouTube clip below.

Starr was found dead in a house in Salt Lake City, Utah on Tuesday afternoon (March 8), according to TMZ.com. Starr, who was a founding member of the group and played on its first two albums, was 44 years old. Police who were called to the scene said that foul play was not suspected, but that drugs were found near the body. Starr's father told TMZ.com, "It's a terrible shock and tragedy."

According to The Pulse Of Radio, Starr had struggled with drug problems for years and was dismissed from ALICE IN CHAINS in 1993 due to his addiction. He had been arrested numerous times over the years for DUI, reckless driving, and various drug charges in Los Angeles, Seattle and Salt Lake City. Just last month he was arrested for felony possession of a controlled substance in the latter city.

Starr was featured as a cast member of the third season of the VH1 reality series "Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew" in 2009. Hosted by Dr. Drew Pinsky, the season consisted of eight episodes that followed the real-life experiences of celebrity patients undergoing detoxification and treatment at the Pasadena Recovery Center. However, like fellow rocker participant Steven Adler of GUNS N' ROSES fame, Starr seemed to struggle once his season on the show was finished.

The members of ALICE IN CHAINS had been vocal about their distaste for "Celebrity Rehab" during Starr's tenure on the show. Guitarist Jerry Cantrell called it at the time a "real travesty," while drummer Sean Kinney also blasted it. "It exploits people at their lowest point, when they're not in their right mind, and the sad part is, this is like entertainment for people when it's actually a life and death situation," he said. "I don't think it helps anybody and it makes entertainment out of people's possible death, and that's pathetic and it's stupid. So I don't support that show at all and I think it's pretty disgusting."

Following the news of Starr's death, Pinsky tweeted, "Devastating to hear of Mike Starr succumbing to his illness. So very sad. Our prayers are with his family."

Starr was ALICE IN CHAINS' first bassist and played with the band from 1987 to 1993. He appeared on the band's first two albums, "Facelift" and "Dirt", but left in the middle of the "Dirt" tour and was replaced by current bassist Mike Inez.

ALICE IN CHAINS vocalist Layne Staley died in 2002 after a long struggle with drug addiction that halted the band's career for years, until they returned in 2009 with new singer William DuVall and new album "Black Gives Way To Blue".

For the record, just got off the phone with Sheppard, and this subject came up. I asked him and he was never in AiC, he was in a pre-AiC band with Layne called Sleeze (a "complete poison knockoff, big hair, chandelier earrings", in his words), and when Layne left to join AiC, he asked Jim to come with him, but Jim was getting involved with Sanctuary at this point and turned him down. Layne said to Jim when Sanctuary got signed by Epic, "Don't forget me man", only to have AiC get signed not too long later and become one of the biggest bands in the world. Evidently Layne was a huge Sanctuary fan and Jim said he heard him sing Battle Angels once and he hit all of the high notes. Hearing that blew me away, because he was NOT known for that kind of singing. Not getting in here to "drop names" or whatever, just wanted to give you guys some insight to something you might be interested in, and to set the record straight.

Jason, I am not asking this to be a pest, but rather to get an honest answer from you.

Do you really think that any mentions in the veins of "knowing this or that guy in that band" necessarily mean name dropping, when it's being used strictly to prove a point that's valuable to the conversation?

I just ask this because it's not the first time I see you picking on someone for using that as evidence to prove a point, not merely name dropping... I mean, you do it yourself with November's Doom, so...

I am just goofin on the dude....
Stop taking yourselfs so seriously.
The reason for the post was in direct response for his apparent realization that it might come off as name dropping.

Name dropping a Novembers Doom member and 50 cents MIGHT get you a small Frosty at Wendy's.... If you're lucky...........

Jim Sheppard of Nevermore and Sanctuary a no-name? Nice try "Tate"r Tot.

Seriously man....
Why are you so defensive today?

For me personally ,I say that you were not dropping names, and bringing up Sheppard in direct response to the board's discussion as to whether or not the dude was technically the original AIC bassist.
