ok. is it just me, or would he be more successfull if he started his own band? he has a fantastic voice and killer range. but i think he tends to ruin good bands like judas priest and iced earth.

but the problem is, he is so good, he is in high demand by bands who have lost great singers, like the above mentioned bands.

so what do you think about this metal character?

well, see i agree with him joining good bands and not really producing anything good. however, i am somewhat of a purist. good bands, whom i become familiar with, can't really go and replace leads singers or guitarists - the character and feeling of the band is lost and its essentially a different band playing clone material when these members are replaced (in my view).

sure, the material may be good, but its never what you originally enjoyed, so i never really get into it.

so yeah, i agree they are better off to find their own bands, rather than joining established ones.

thats how i feel about iced earth. i cant get into the new stuff cuz it just doesnt sound like iced earth.

i cant stand tim ownes. I hate his voice and his god damn shadow boxing. The main reason I dont like this guy is because he killed Iced Earth, which has been one of my favorite bands for a long time. He just does not fit well in that band IMO.

I got to agree man, I hate that 'lets change the band members' crap. It's one in a billion to get four or five guys to get together and create great albums. By breaking the formation you fuck up the formula. It becomes a different band. I would mention bands but I am too bored to start writing tones of names

OK here is the problem: Ripper is a clone of Halford. Nothing wrong with that if that's what you want to do in your life.

BUT Ripper hasn't got the same writing abilities or the same imagination as Halford does. Therefore I think he could be great with someone totally directing him on his vocal melodies and performance.

He needs to be produced by somebody. It seems to me, because he is who he is people just let him get on with his input and the result is far from good I'm afraid :ill:

Thanks dude, I haven’t laughed so hard in ages :tickled:

Well......I haven't heard much Halford live, but the few things I have show me that Halford isn't really the best vocalist....Should I be listening to Unleashed In The East or something? Because I heard Leather Rebel live, and it was immediately obvious that he used studio help on the album. At one point I heard a bootleg of Painkiller live with Halford, and it basically sounded like a cat in heat. Meanwhile, the live of Owens I've heard doing Painkiller he does it perfectly and can actually hit the high notes instead of just kind of screaming them.

Basically....if he sounded live like he does on Painkiller, then he would easily be better than Owens, but he doesn't. I guess I'll go listen to something from Unleashed In The East. I did watch their live DVD and he basically sounds like he does on Screaming For Vengeance, and I guess the other records.

I just listened to "The Ripper" from Unleashed In The East. He just isn't so great in terms of being a singer. He's missing big things like vibrato, which are vital in metal music. His voice just seems to come out as weak sounding.

Well I would suggest you should get the Screaming for Vengeance vid in Memphis. That's totally raw and his voice kicks total ass, especially the track Devil's Child is the bollocks!!

the Unleashed album is produced poorly, even so he sounds great!

I am also sorry to say dude, I can't rate a singer by the amount of vibrato he or she uses.

Halford is the best metal singer.- :worship:

He has started his own band, and he's pretty much done with all the material.

Now, as for the second comment, what the FUCK? Are you sure it was him who made Jugulator and Demoltion mediocre albums, or was it Glenn Tipton's stubborness and crappy songwriting?

How bout Iced Earth? I mean, shit, he made that shitty ass album a bit tolerable. If it was Matt Barlow bellowing like a doofus about how much he loves America, I would've vomited in disgust. And obviously, that album sucked because of Schaffer beating a horse that's been LONG dead in the songwriting department..

His voice and attitude are Metal. He doesn't have a sissy voice like Halford, he has a proper mans voice.

A man's voice? :tickled: give me a break man!

Just because he growls and then he does the high Halford like screams?

Please! If it wasn't for Halford Ripper wouldn't be singing how he is now,
I mean his name is 'Ripper' from the Priest song, what tha fuck?

But you can. That's vocal technique. And for someone who is a lead singer, they should have it. That's what separates the pop people from most of the metal people. If you can sing a simple, mid-range melody, you use vibrato to make it sound full and rich, neither Halford nor Ozzy have that, although Halford is much better than Ozzy. Halford may be very metal and have a great band, but he's not really up there in terms of singing skills.
