Early mix for my bands new CD...This is a rough "master", and it's too loud and pumping on the fills ( I mixed with phones on)...But my main concern at this point is the drums.

Kick and toms are 50/50 blend of natural drum tones and samples of the actual kit being played. I can't quite get the EQ sussed out the way I like but tell me if I'm on the right track...Snare is the miked tone blended with Snare 15 from Slate.

If I can get these toms and kick the way I like I may post the trigger tci files for them...Still need some EQ tweaks though...And if you guys can give pointers, maybe it'll help!

thanks!

yah the timing is good sounds pretty quantized well done, the done is just a little too spacy for me and high pitched...nothing some good ol' tweaking cant fix! everything else sounds pretty good man well done

Digging the guitar tone a lot here, Nate!

About the drums, not really digging the snare either. I think the complete opposite of the snare, tho. Too low-pitched and a bit too dry.

The toms sound a tad too dark, thuddy and kinda cardboardy for my taste too.

I'd raise the kick a tad.

I understand this is just a rough mix, but I think the bass is either too woofy, or too loud.

Nate you need a finalizer on that!!:heh:

Joking aside i cant tell shit on the laptop and I will check it out when i get a free minute on some monitors.

Funny you say that about the toms...I kept killing the high end with a shelf because I didn't want them to stick out too much, haha. I tend to go overboard with high end, so I tried to keep it down.

The snare has a LOT of body in the 200Hz range, and I tend to cut out a lot of ring. When we tuned the drums, we used the Snare 10a sample to try to tune to and then we used the new Maple Toms to tune the toms to, we got REALLY close on the raw tom tones to the samples as far as pitch goes. The snare ended up sounding way too thuddy, so I may end up replacing most of it instead of leaving too much of the natural tone.

I have a small bit of reverb on the drums, but I turned it down, too, as I tend to go overboard on drum verb.

As far as the low end, I boosted it on the master bus, which I shouldn't have done. All your comments are dead on with dumb little tweaks I did right before I rendered the mix, haha.

you truly have no idea how much I miss that thing. I actually ended up bidding on a couple on ebay yesterday afternoon...We'll see if I win any. I don't want to spend too much, and it seems even the Express has gone up on the bay.

Hmmm, thanks. I could see that with guitars and toms and kick (but that's common), but I have no EQ on the mids on anything else...No EQ at all on the vocals at this point. I have a 2dB boost around 80Hz on the mix but nothing on the highs.

I went back and reworked and re-EQ'd some stuff, perhaps adding back in some mids. I changed up the tom tracks from using Waves RChannel to using the SSL E Channel and I like it a lot better. I've had the RChannel for so long I feel like I'm used to it, but the E Channel I've only had since the Waves special around the holidays...I don't feel like I know the analog layout as well, but I like these results!

The toms are MUCH better... I'm also LOVING that guitar tone, man. Really nice character in the palm-mutes. I think the mix is great...

EXCEPT... I'm still not digging that snare. I don't really know where to point my finger at what I don't like about it, but I think it sounds like it could use some more room sample in there. Also... I'm still worried a bit about the low-end. I don't think it's bad at all, but I'm thinking perhaps taming it just a tiny tiny bit more would benefit the whole.

If anything, I'd make the toms cut a tiny tiny bit more too, but not much.

Second mix sounds better, beefier.
Drums sound OK to me, but I'm no expert on that.
Good tune.

Joey :)
