Flatwounds suck. Hell yeah I use roundwounds. I've heard they can wear out the fingerboard. On my old fretless custom it started to wear in some grooves. But honestly the more it ground that up, the more character the sound had. I eventually got a new bass and didn't have the opportunity to see how long it would take to destroy it. It had an ebony wood board, so maybe the harder wood had something to do with that. The difference in sound far out weighs the potential damage from using strings that sound dead right out of the pack.
