Roy Mayorga: How I Got Stone Sour Studio Drum Sounds (mic run through etc)

changing drum skins after 3 or 4 takes....holy shit!!!! now i know why those guys hang around in studios for months/years to record an album. :)

and what a nice collection of mics. let´s hope they are all getting used....but maybe in the end the complete set gets triggered/replaced anyway.

Anyone else think that the Mission statement mix contains way too much sub lows? Jesus..

There's also something else that really bothers me with the mix.. Definitely not the best of Nick Raskulinecz.

Changing skins that often is just silly.. absolutely no point in it.
Thats like changing guitar strings after every single take. D;

Also.. 7 microphones on the snare to get that sound?
Didn't sound that much better then the 2x57 recordings we are so used to hear to be honest, even worse when you consider that its obviously sample replaced.. but with that said, the drumtone is great on this album.

agreed dude, im a big fan of really worn in drum skins (not to the point where they are dented and sound like shit) i just prefer less ring and yeah, all that effort to go and at least put some samples in there

It's 7 mics on kick and snare combined. ;) Anyway, sick setup. Haven't heard much of the results yet, but I'll surely be picking this up.

SS made a real catch with Roy, dude has an awesome style and is tight as can be.

Wow, cool catch there. Nice to see a drummer on top of what's going on the engineering side. I thought I got extravagant with 18 channels of drums... far out.

Interesting overhead set-up. Two Telefunkens in what seems to be an ORTF pair, with a mono 57 high above, and a ton of spot mics on the cymbals all around. Crazy.

What caught me as interesting was the mic they apparently aimed at the snare shell. Is that common, to use that 3rd shell mic alongside the usual snare top and bottom?

Also, are those clips from the old record? It sounds like a Randy mix.
