Ok, so there's really no point to this thread other than to say HOLY SHIT, Royal Hunt with John West on vocals is amazing!

I heard some of their old material w/ DC Cooper and newer stuff w/ Mark Boals, and I hated it. Idk how I missed the entire John West era. I heard the song "The Mission" on the compalation cd that came with my Onward cd back in 2002, but I thought it was a different band.

Does anyone have any information on what they used during West's time with them for vocal recording? All I know is that their keyboardist André Andersen did the production. Details are very limited as they never became that popular I guess.

I love West's version of "Far Away" from the D. C. Cooper RH lineup. This live version is from their 2006 double live DVD.

Edit: For some reason, all of the youtube vids from this live dvd have audio that sounds like crap. I know the DVD sounds much better, so as soon as I get it I will upload better sounding HQ clips for anyone that's interested.

I actually sort of like the new Royal Hunt album "X", I have most of their discs as I always like Andre Andersen's keyboard work. I really like the synths on it and I liked that Andre tried to go pretty "old school" on this record according to their studio diary, seeking out some real old analog synths and organs instead of just using samplers and workstation sounds. It took a few listens but it's been a bit of a grower on me.

Unfortunately I can't help with your question about the what was used on those older discs for vocals and such.

^ That may not be the case ... I love Helloween and used to really like NR and Edguy ... personally I could never stand Royal Hunt ;)

Eh, to each their own I guess. They're not for everyone. Personally, I love cheesy catchy melodic metal like this. Of course, I'm a huge fan of anything that brings me back to the 80's music mindset. :D

I take it you're not into other power metal bands like Nocturnal Rites, Edguy, Helloween, etc.?

I actually like a lot of Helloween's material, both early and recent. On the other hand, Edguy are probably my least favorite band ever. Can't stand Tobias Sammett's obnoxious asshole voice or their predictable fruity major key choruses. Haven't heard Nocturnal Rites.

My choice power metal bands are stuff like Symphony X, Kamelot, Angra, Stratovarius, etc... Which is odd, since they have some of the same traits as Royal Hunt, but just not as excessive I guess.

Agreed with all of the above except to say that Roy Khan, while having a fantastic vocal tone, has not a nut hanging. That guy is the most lukewarm vocalist I've ever heard, not a hint of edge to his voice which is great in some passages, others it really seems to be lacking. Edguy's older material was pretty cool, mostly "Vain Glory" and "Theater of Salvation" ... they moved into über-cheese and then just shit writing after that. He started using all his best ideas for Avantasia

Matt, check out either "Afterlife" or especially "Shadowland" from Nocturnal Rites ... GREAT cds even if "Afterlife" has a bit of a shitty production ... the whole thing sounds way over compressed
