Russell on the new Star One album

heather findlay is the only good female vocalist he's worked with but that album sucked ass. so many talents brought together to perform such shitty songs.

Beauty has nothing to do with her voice. And I liked After Forever through Decipher, but beyond that it wasn't good. The thing with Arjen is he seems to get people to sing in ways/sing melodies they just don't do in their normal stuff. he's good at getting a "different" performance out of people, which can be good and it can be bad. In floor's case, bad, and almost without exception.

No, I meant to say, not only is she beautiful but she also has the voice of an angel, at least to me. Europeans are spoiled with their attractive female progressive metal vocalists (like Simone Simons), while we Americans have Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus

Anyway, being a multi-instrumentalist who loves rock operas myself, I look up to Arjen. By far, my favorite album of all time is Into the Electric Castle. The only album that is hard for me to listen to by him is The Human Equation, but only because of the lyrics and how depressing they are! Pretty much the entire storyline is "feel bad for this guy, his dad left him", "feel bad for this guy, he got beat up in school", "feel bad for this guy, he caught his best friend cheating with his wife", etc. I want to listen to music so that it can make me happy, not sad! The world is depressing enough already!

I agree with Kenn MOSTLY! Alot of Arjens stuff is hit or miss, I'm not a huge fan of ayreon at all. However i've always been a big fan of starone, Russell And Damian are an amazing duo. I enjoy after forever, but Floor didn't contribute much to the music that was Starone. IMO anyways...

Needless to say, I'm looking forward to a new album! :)

@SymphonyXV: See, I don't mind depressing. I listen to music for all sorts of emotion, its one of the things I look for most in music. Is heavy emotion, whether it be negative, or positive emotion. I usually enjoy the tear jerkers more than that smile inducing.

No, I don't mind maybe one or two depressing songs on an album, but I can't listen to 2 discs of non stop depression. I wish he would have made the concept of the Human Equation to be something else, because the music is very good but I can't ignore the lyrics. I actually gave the CD away because of that. What's the point of having a CD when I'm not going to listen to it. Into the Electric Castle can be a little depressing (the worst is the Valley of Queens song) but it's not to be taken seriously, it's just a cheesy sci-fi story.

Also, has anyone listened to the first After Forever album, "Prison of Desire"? It's not bad at all!

Floor Jansen is awesome! The problem is that Arjen had her mostly harmonizing with either a singer or a lead and didn't really give Floor the floor(if you will) to let it all hang out. Hopefully he will on this one, and let Russell be more prominent in the mix as well.

I really liked the work that he got out of Lana Lane. She has a very clear and soothing voice and I would like to see her work with Arjen, Russell, and Damian again(the best things about 2000's The Universal Migrator[and oh yeah, Bruce Dickinson]).

And yeah, "Prison Of Desire" & "Decipher" were pretty fuckin' good.

Tarja shouldn't be let anywhere near a Arjen project.

I am pretty certain one of the reasons she was kicked out/quit Nightwish was because she hates Metal, and the fans. So I highly doubt, unless she is desperate for cash, she will even come near another metal album.

I also think that Arjen has better tastes than that! Why go for bitchy Tarja, when you have so many other fish in the sea. Simone Simmons for example! Id prefer Amy Lee on anything Arjen before I would Tarja!

Pretty sure Arjen's projects have never produced a single good song

The whole band hates metal, what other explanation can there be for what they put out? :S

progressive metal vocalists (like Simone Simons)

Simone Simons? Progressive metal? Have I stepped into an alternate universe? I feel light-headed...

So much fail in this topic. Floor's great, but I generally don't think Arjen does a very good job with her. My House On Mars was a complete waste of her talent, and while she sounded good on Star One, it was far from her best effort. The only time I was impressed with her on an Arjen project was in the song Liquid Eternity when she sang with Jorn, that part was fantastic, from both of them. She's awesome on any of the AF albums, and solid on her newest album, even though the music itself is often weak.

And hating on Tarja just seems the cool thing to do at this point, so it gets annoying whenever I see it. I like her, and would be glad to have her on an Arjen album, preferably an Ayreon.

Anyway, I loved the first Star One, so I also have high hopes for the new album. I just hope Floor and Russell are used better this time, as neither of them were at their best on the original.

I like you, and agree on most of your topics. Namely:

1) Floor is talented and is just not used right by Arjen (a point i tried to make when i mentioned that Arjen has a habit of getting "different" performances out of vocalists, which seems to negatively impact Floor to my ear)

2) Tarja hit her prime on Oceanborn and Wishmaster (both albums I fell in love with in 2001/2002) and I still think those albums rule and she's great on them.

3) don't have a 3.

I really like Arjen's work, cheesiness and all :loco:

If it wasn't for Ayreon I wouldn't have found many other bands that I now enjoy. Also, Isis and Osiris has the most plays of any song on my Mp3 (followed by the Accolade :D )
