I posted this:
http://www.ultimatemetal.com/forum/production-tips/664653-how-do-get-good-tone-rythm.html

And as you can see I got the advice of posting here too/instead.
You know what I'm after.. gritty-ish distortion..

I just made a test with Amlitube 2 and a IR, no processing:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2383166/TONETEST.wav

This is from 3 - 4 years ago, quadtracked, simulanalogs JCM and Amplitube 2:
http://www.esnips.com/doc/d7c4351d-6202-4ad1-9e23-54c2753d30ac/Burns-In-Me-81-x
I only get "creamy" distortion, don't know how to put it...
But I want more like the suburban tribe example / Korn - Eaten up inside / Wicked Wisdom - Something inside of me..

In the clip I just made there's 0.09 strings I believe..
They came with the guitar, I usually have 0.10, but now I've bought 0.13 hopefully that'll help..

Don't have a budget, so free solutions would be great, but all advice is welcome.. some stuff I might be able to afford..

what the gauge of ALL strings, and tuning you play?

Also it sounds like (very) old strings

Hey
Usually I have .010 set..
But now I've bought sort of a custom D'Addario set (always used D'Addario)..
Talked with my local store about it..
.011
.013
.017
.026w
.036
.056

I usually play in drop-c, but it depends on the song..
Sometimes it's A-drop (on my 7string) and sometimes it's D-drop..
On the clip that I just made it's old (a couple of months) strings, and a .09 set.. but I always use fresh strings when recording, like in the song clip..

In the song they did'nt sound that bad, and I pretty like the simulanalog for some styles, but no for Metal, you should try Le456 ou Legion from LePou.

I use a pretty similar set on Drop D

To me, I liked the guitars in the second clip. They could use more body in my preference, but I think the tone would sound good with better drums and a solid bass tone. Or, maybe my ears just suck.

I thought the tone on the second clip sounded pretty good tbh. Unless the material you're working on now requires something fundamentally different, I don't see why you still shouldn't be using it.

As for the tone in the first clip, it sounded sort of "underpowered", if that makes sense. Try the LePou Lecto if you're looking for a heavy rhythm tone. Adding a TS sim or two wouldn't hurt either. Also, you may want to try out some new IRs. There's plenty of good free stuff out there, but the best results I got so far were from OwnHammers and ReCabinets.

Thanks for the replies guys!

@RobertW
It's sort of the sound I want (didn't do any processing) but with that grainy distortion (the examples in the other thread)..

I think I had a TS sim in the song clip, but now I have a Bad Monkey (and a Damage Control Solid Metal), that's doing an okay job.. I'll be using that..
I own the redwirez and a ton of free IR's.. and now I have a combo to mic..
Still that tone.. Can't nail it.. :D
AFAIK they use Suburban Tribe uses Bogner.. I heard some good tones with a Krankenstein (album mixed by Jens Bogren).. Can't afford that though..
As far as free sims, the TSE X30 is capable of some good stuff and the ABG C-15.. I've heard good results with LePous stuff.. but I haven't been able to produce anything with them..

I have never heard of Suburban Tribe but I just went and looked them up. I think you could get close with LePou's LE456 on the low gain setting and the TSS to tighten it up. I would try that and play around with impulses until I found the right one. Just my thoughts.

+1 to the LePou stuff.

You might also want to try the Ignite Amps sims that have been posted here. They have a really good pre amp and TS sim. Both of which handle metal tones especially well.

I've must've tried LePou's LE456.. But I'll give it another go!
I think I have most of the free amps..
I'll take another round with LePou's stuff and post some clips..

Here's another example of, my bad explanation of, "gritty" distortion:

Read that they recorded with 4 cabs and had 4 - 5 mics on each cab.. maybe that's what does it..

You may not want to be switching back and forth between tunings on one guitar like that, it fucks up the intonation and the difference in tension between .13s and .10s is going to require some intonating to begin with. You may want to designate a guitar to one tuning you like most.

If you're going for a grainy sound, try LePou's Lextac with no screamer on it, and then try a few different impulses. I was a fan of LePou's LeCab for a while but lately I've been sticking with Voxengo Boogex for an IR loader, it seems to work quite well with just one impulse.

ATM I can't afford another guitar, and I have to change tunings for different songs of mine.. but I do intonate when changeing strings/recording.. Hopefully I don't have to adjust the trussrod when going with .013, since it'll be C-drop or lower..

From what I've read Voxengo Pristine space, IIRC, was the cleanest IR loader.. But I too prefer Boogex..

An update..
I recorded some clips with different sims, same IR, no post processing, with my Bad Monkey..

This time I used my Stratocaster VII , old strings + not intonated.. BUT.. It's a lot closer.. with some tweaking and fresh strings+thicker gauge, I think the Amplitube Metal and LE456 might be able to pull it off.. and I also have the warwick cabinett to mic..
I tried the latest Revalver demo, good sound there as well, couldn't record with it though since it was only standalone (?)..

Use AmpliTube Metal and AmpliTube 2 together in X-GEAR. Try the Modern Tube Lead PRE MODEL with the 150W 6L6 MT AMP MODEL. And then drive it with the Metal Distortion or Distortion Feed pedal. This should give you some pretty heavy tones.

I should also mention that AmpliTube 3 uses the latest generation of our DSM technology plud our reworked cab section with dual mics and continuous 3D placement, and includes everything from AmpliTube Metal and a whole lot more. 31 amps, 46 cabs, 51 stomps, and 17 racks. And it's about to get even bigger...

As a registered AmpliTube user, you qualify for our upgrade pricing of just $199.99.

If I wanted to hear a sales pitch on amplitube I'd go to the website.
