Sahg- I
Regain Records– 7320470068083– April 18, 2006
By Zack Attaran
Side projects are really fucking good these days. Sahg, which features members from Gorgoroth, Manngard and Audrey Horne, are no exception. As a matter of fact, this CD should really come with a disclaimer. It would read, “This does not sound anything like the aforementioned bands, but still kicks ass if you like good music and have a working pair of ears.” That would almost stomp as much ass as this powerhouse debut does.
Alright, maybe I’m overdoing it, but I really think a lot of people are going to flock to this release. It has appeal on so many levels, it’s almost hard for you to not like it upon listening. The vocals that are reminiscent of Ozzy Osbourne will appeal to the elitist who will only give things a chance if they were released before 1990, while the brilliant acoustic passages will reel in the melodic lover who wouldn’t dare touch the ‘classics’, or whatever they’re called. Oh yeah, this is a solid release. There isn’t a dull song featured and the experience from previous bands really breaks through. What really makes the album a piece of gold, though, is the instrumental ’Whisper Og Abaddon’, which adds a perfect touch to an already amazing debut.
Alright, alright, its not 24 karat gold, but it’s pretty damn close. Maybe the bass player knows what I’m talking about. Perhaps he should try mixing up his lines? Sure would add a little variation in there, which is definitely needed during the solos. Dare I say a little repetitive at times, too? Ya, I know, for a guy who listens to Opeth this should be a walk in the park, but something just isn’t right there. Maybe the atmosphere just doesn’t build on me…
Anyway, this is kick ass doom and anyone who’s into stuff from the Norwegian scene will love this, especially fans of Kyuss. I also see death metallers liking this, as long as they open their minds. Keep things going strong Sahg! It's sounding good to my ears!
