SAVATAGE reunion at Wacken 2015!

I never got Savatage. I've been to metal fests around the world, and although I certainly haven't talked to *everyone*, I've never met a big Savatage fan, or anyone who even mentions them.
There's a thread over at the BraveWords board right now and while I recognize one user over there as a PPUSA user, there are non-PPUSA fans anticipating it and I've definitely seen discussion of them all over the place and have met people who don't come to this forum and/or ProgPower that are into them.

They're ok with me and WOMD was pretty good, but I think this board builds up their popularity a bit! I can't imagine them moving a lot of tickets for Wacken.
Considering Wacken already sold out - and generally always sells out in a matter of days - I'd say that's somewhat of a moot point. Their booking generated a lot of discussion at other forums, and Wacken doesn't strike me as the type of fest that would give them such a high booking just for shits and giggles.

:bah:

You never got Savatage, but you're saying WOMD was pretty good. WOMD was just a handful of live dates that Jon, Doc and Caff did together. They didn't record any new material, but simply played the classics. How can that be any better than the original Savatage?

Also, you can't imagine them moving alot of tickets for Wacken. Well, the Wacken promoters aren't going to put a band in the headlining slot that won't keep the momentum going.

'He Carves His Stone' is probably one of the greatest Metal songs ever. They have a lot of good, emotional and melodic songs that translate well to all types of audiences. But if you're into the more Metal stuff I'd recommend 'Power Of The Night' or 'Hall Of The Mountain King'. That's just classic stuff if you haven't heard them.

Sorry, I shouldn't have said that. I tried to describe them in a generic positive way just to emphasize that I wasn't trolling or trying to start an argument. I was totally confused why they would headline anywhere, and found most of the songs to be pretty lacking.

It's perfectly valid for you to have an opinion. It's just that this one is horribly wrong.

Oh, man I LOVE "Power of the Night"! I would kill to hear that album in it's entirety live! The Progpower stage would be perfect!

I held out as long as I could!

First, I have no issue with you not liking them. I can totally understand your view from that standpoint, regardless of how insane it is.

Otherwise, Savatage can headline any metal festival in the world.

They were more popular than you realize back in the 80/90's. They had several gold albums. They have a 22 year tour history that includes opening for the big boys back in the day to traveling the globe as a headliner. They were all over Headbanger's Ball with HotMk, GBallet, and Edge of Thorns. They were wildly popular overseas and have headlined several festivals previously. Simply put, they have a cult following from back in the day that remains dedicated (their popularity on this forum is a prime example).

That said, the "eternal hiatus" has contributed to their mystique and continued to build over the past decade. The TSO popularity has only fueled that fire even more. That hiatus is also why you don't see much visibility at current shows/fests now. I sure as fuck don't fit in a shirt I own from 20 years ago myself.

Wacken believes in them so much that they signed them as an exclusive European appearance. I sold out last year based on the strength of the "Streets" exclusive performance.

I could go on and on from a business perspective. Getting a full blown Savatage set at ProgPower USA remains the holy grail for me. However, if you don't get it...you don't get it. That's ok. Just don't expect the rest of the community to agree with you.

I knew lots of Savatage fans back in the day (myself included), and I have been on several other boards where people worshiped them. No surprise to me that their long-awaited reunion would be headlining Wacken.

Glenn, to prove your point even further, I wouldn't give a rat's ass who else you lined up for the rest of the festival if you got this. I'd probably be at your home throwing my money at your front door for a ticket!

Glenn just gave away 2016 headliner for ProgPowerUSA...the MIGHTY FUCKING SAVATAGE! Finishing their set with "When The Crowds Are Gone", as Glenn says "Thank You & Goodbye", drops the mic and walks off

I am not a fan either. Saw them back in 90 with Nuclear Assault and Testament...they didn't go over well at that show. Most of the crowd used them as a beer break.

I will say they are hugely popular now more than back then. Almost everyone I know is a fan and this ranges from metal snobs to fans of black / death metal. That reunion show at Wacken is huge. I know tons of people who wanted to go and see it. Anyone saying they are not headline worthy are nuts and this is coming from someone who hates the band.

Bob, you break my heart when you talk like this.

I was not a huge Savatage fan until Streets came out ... after hearing Mindcrime and then getting into 2112 - streets blew my mind. Edge of Thornes was all over the radio here and then Cris died. So much changed - Jon was having medical issues, Cris was gone. And then they did Handful of Rain, which is one of my desert island discs. Except for the first 30 seconds of Taunting Cobra's - which I can't stand, it's one of the most emotional discs of all time. Chance was like Queen but heavier. and you can hear Jon cry as Zak sings and Alex plays Alone you Breathe.

They then went proggy with the Dead Winter Dead and Wake of Magellen - which I liked. I got to see Zak, Jon, Al, Chris, Johnny and Jeff play on the Magellan tour just before Al left for Megadeth at the Riv in Chicago. Look at this set list - http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/savatage/1998/metro-chicago-il-5bd603ac.html ... it fucking rocked.

I saw them on the poet's tour but I thought Jack couldn't hold up to Al and the Zak's replacement downright sucked.

I went to my first ProgPower since the first one in Chicago last year solely on Streets being played. Remedy Lane and Visions didn't hurt either ;-) If Glenn get's savatage and Shattered Skies for 2016 I will be back for sure !!! HA.

Getting a full blown Savatage set at ProgPower USA remains the holy grail for me..

This is the best news I've heard in a long long time and FWIW attending a ProgPower USA with Savatage playing is the holy grail for me. If you get them to ProgPower USA, then I'll buy the ticket the day they go on sale.

You don't do that already? Shit, I set an alarm for it, lol.

But yeah, full on Savatage at PPUSA would be beyond a certain appearance for me.

TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA AND SAVATAGE SPECIAL SHOW

To All Our Friends,
“The moment is now
In all history
The time has arrived
And this is the one place to be!”

To say that all of us are feeling surreally excited about the rapidly approaching concert on July 30th, at Wacken is a massive understatement. The closest we can come to describing it, is a family reunion, with over 75,000 of our friends, in the epicenter of the Metal World. In a world that is currently exhausted by non-stop reports of uncertainty and divisiveness, Wacken Open Air Festival, stands as a living, breathing testament of inclusiveness and hope. We all get to reconnect, meet old friends and make new ones.

Everyone at this festival is united by the common language of Heavy Metal and all its variations. Metal is a unique phenomenon, whose power to unite and persevere has long been underestimated. It currently bridges all nationalities, occupations, and most impressively, generations.

All of us in Trans Siberian Orchestra and Savatage cannot believe the luck that has given us the opportunity to take a break from recording the new album Letters From The Labyrinth, so that we can meet up in Wacken, Germany and together, look back at how we got here, as well as forward to possibly catch a glimpse of what might be. This is a once in a lifetime show for Savatage & TSO that we hope you will never forget.

On a final note, we are fascinated by the power that allows this night to happen year after year. It has nothing to do with electricity, pyro, or speaker wattage. It is a force far more powerful, but is subtly hidden in the name, "Wacken Open Air Festival." The multiple day concert is possible in the "Open Air," because tens of thousands of people, from all over the world, can set up tents, share food, and go to sleep without locked doors or windows. This is because there is an overwhelming feeling of trust.

In this environment, all can relax, and the night will be free to weave magic both old and new.

See you at the show,
Savatage & TSO
