the biggest negative fall-out of the "cheap home recording gear era" is that i get approached to mix some things that were tracked.... well.... not good.

this is one of those.. a massive "save job": http://safehouseproduction.com/HW/player.html

i took on the job because i personally get on well with the band members... but it was some work. some serious work.

bands who do this... poor self recording... always discover that in the end they've actually spent more money for their end product, not less.

this lesson needs to sink in on a larger scale.... i for one surely hope it does.

oh yeah.. the band is from Atlanta, Georgia and are called Halcyon Way... they play some form of power metal.

Dude, it sounds awesome, It would be really interesting to hear the original tracking. Just to hear the difference...

But I know what you're saying about save-jobs. I've done a couple of them and some are real disasters, clicks and pops and tracks out of sync. Click tracks recorded on the same channel as the hihat etc.

Could sound a lot worse... how much of that is the original recording? Judging by how much 'saving' my 'save jobs' tend to need, I know there's no way my half-assed stuff could get anywhere near that good...

Seriously, that sounds great. I, too, would love to hear the originals if this was a save.

And, they may have ended up spending more than they planned. But I doubt they could have gotten this kind of quality from many studios.

It sounds great.

It almost sounds like power metal Styx mixed with a little nu-metal, 3 Days Grace style. Kinda interesting, and I must admit I like the vocals. I usually don't get along with these types of vocals, but something about the voice I like. Just sounds more "classic rock" than modern rock.

I like this track quite a bit. Did the vocals have to be "saved" as well? Can this guy hit those notes or are we hearing yet another "auto-tune symphony?" (not a hack on you. I'm speaking in general terms)

Sorry. Had to be asked.

If you're interested in hearing some of the original stuff, you can check out our myspace page below. James asked me to re-cut the guitars DI, and we had to fix some tuning issues during that process. Multitasking as an engineer is not a good thing. There are some mixes that I did (rough of course) up on the MS page. Sean can in fact hit all of those notes, although some vocal tuning had to happen because they were tracked to some guitars with tuning issues. Domino effect - but check out "I Fought The World Today" on the myspace page and you'll hear some stuff that is completely raw.
