Saw the first go around a couple years ago with Vai & Napoleon Murphy Brock. I'm a HUGE zappa fanatic, so this was almost like being there, plus, I never got to see FZ with Vai, and never heard Vai play FZ stuff live, except on tape & DVD. I'm actually quite proud of what Dweezil has done, especially after being a very harsh critic of The Zappa Family Trust. I ran into Steve Vai on the streets of Chicago, and he seemed very genuinely impressed at what Dweezil has done, and is going to do with ZPZ.

p.s. You really need to get The Torture Never Stops Halloween show on DVD (from 1981) available at the barfko-swill link at Zappa.com

I saw it when it hit DC last year. Blew me away. I never saw Zappa live, so this was as close as I could get. The level of playing was incredible. I also loved the setlist. A bit from all the eras of Zappa including G-spot Tornado. Dweezil has really developed as a player. It'll be really fun once he stops having to concentrate so hard on the technicalities of his playing and can start having a bit more fun on stage.

One thing I really like is they just go out there and start playing. None of that 'dramatic entry' bullshit that so many bands think they have to do.

i got a friend who saw the show in australia and said that they played to a large video of frank up on a screen, like he was actually a member of the band or something haha! they didnt do this at the show i went to though, any of you guys? also, apparently brett garsed got on stage and jammed out with em!

i might check out that dvd, although im not a huge fan of dvds, FZ is definitely one of my all time favorite players.

I missed it when it came to Austin about 6 months ago. Apparently they played the entire Bongo Fury album note for note. I didn't even know about it until the day after. :waah:

They did that at the show I went to. Talk about chills! Dweezil and Frank trading off. Man.. it almost brought me to tears. Frank played with an intensity and in a zen like state that is almost unmatched.

p.s. I heard the DVD is excellent, and it has Bozzio and Vai on it.

I still haven't been able to catch this and truly do kick myself for not moving heaven and earth to see it when Vai was part of it.

Well now Ray White is a part of it. And nobody sings like that man. So if you can see it with him its probably nearly equally awesome. BTW Jamie Kine is really good but when I saw the show I only remember him getting to play one solo.

ray white did some guitar in a few songs and did some improv on cosmik debris i think, they basically morphed that song into a jam track, it was awesome
