Scott said it "EUROPE ALWAY'S LEADS THE WAY"

As John Bush said once in an interview, in Europe people are still very fond of the "old" metal groups such as Anthrax, Slayer, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, because they're much less centered on mass consumation - whereas in America the young ones and people in general are being shoved prepackaged crap (music for the masses a.k.a. Creed=Celine Dion=Blink182) down their throats...
All heavy metal originates from Europe by the way, just look at some of these names and you'll notice quite a few innovators in their own right:
1. Judas Priest
2. Iron Maiden
3. Black Sabbath
4. Venom
5. Motorhead
6. Scorpions
7. Helloween
8. Accept
9. Candlemass
10. Napalm Death

The point is, Europe has always been leading the way in any music genre - The Beatles and The Rolling Stones came from England but yet, took American music and made it popular in America! Black Sabbath and Judas Priest made heavy metal what it is and every other metal band has been in some way inspired by these guys...

That's my somewhat incoherent rambling on this subject and I'm sticking to it! :p

Peace!

Yeah I would also agree with you mentalmeltdown. Unfortunately we both live on the wrong side of the Alantic, when it comes to music. When a nation are less force feed the more open they are. I do think that N.A. has potential if it would get off the force feed crap. It use to be viable
1) Motley Crue
2) Metallica/Megadeth/Slayer/Anthrax (For being pioneers)
3) Skid Row
4) Jimi Hendrix
Just for a few. N.A. still has a few bands that can do something, Annihilator, Voivod, but the list is limited, unlike Europe which it is too simple to list 10 bands off the top of one's head.

Bah I'm done

This was one of the reasons why I moved from California to Holland. Los Angeles used to have such a booming metal mecca. I hear it is becoming one once again, thanks to the tribute bands like The Iron Maidens and Creeping Death Band!

note that Metallica was formed mainly by a european dude called Lars Ulrich (Denmark), and Slayer's Jeff Hanneman has Dutch parents (or at least 1), so you can scrape that off your list...

But I think that the SF & LA Bay Area has really been put on the map with Testament, Sacred Reich, Death Angel, Flotsam & Jetsam, Suicidal, Death, Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse etc. to name a few. I think it's not continents you need to check on this, but areas or states...
