Short New Theocracy Clip

The quality is excellent. I think the bass could use a slight bump in volume.....it has a nice tone. What guitar amp did you use?

i'd like to hear the bass louder in the mix, it sounds good. The drums sound pretty clean, same with the guitars. My only issues with it is the snare seems alittle thin, the guitars sound great but also alittle thin, maybe nudge them up a hair?

Really? Thanks guys. I thought it sounded a bit honky myself, but I seriously spent maybe 5 minutes on the guitars. I have DIs for the whole album and am going to reamp everything at once one weekend when I make the final tone decisions.

The chain there was Schecter Blackjack w/EMGs, Maxon OD820, Peavey 6505+, Mesa Recto Cab w/ V30s, SM57, stock RME Fireface preamp, Nuendo. Quad tracked (2 lead channel, 2 rhythm channel--thanks, Shane) and post EQd a little (thanks, Colin).
I definitely have to fiddle with the low end on the kicks...the sub in my truck was pounding a bit too much. Trying to judge low end in a small room sucks.

More of the same here. I think the drums are killer. And to end the teaser with that snare roll is just mean. There is something that I can't quite place that I don't like about the bass, but I'm listening on crappy speakers, so it's likely those. All in all, it sounds great!

I agree with you in saying that the guitars are a little honky, in that they still sound a bit "demo-ish" and dull (VERY slightly). The bass has somethnig funny gonig on, but I cant tell what exactly it is. The drums sound great, I actually like the snare.

Sounds great, keyboards aren't bad either ;) But the high toms seem lost in the mixed compared to the mid/low toms. Maybe cut a little low end off the toms and boost them all in volume. The snare is sounding really good, but I've noticed something on some of the snare hits where it sounds like two hits really close together. I'm having this same problem with drumagog when I print the sampled track.

I really live the verb on the whole kit. What did you use? It's got a nice big open sound but still remains very tight. :kickass:

Just awesome. It's so warm, yet so clear. Incredibly funny that it's a mere demo, and you're gonna change everything, even if only slightly. If it was me, I would just do a whole album with that exact band tone, I wouldn't change a damn thing.

I tried the Colin eq with dual 57s but I was doing it wrong, cuz it sounded like total fucking dog shit. At least I get to hear you pros do it right.

Ok, honest assesment:

Overall, it's the typical "Matt Smith Magic" we've all come to expect from you. I.E. Impressive as hell. Still, it needs some tweaking, but nothing major. The rhythm guitars kinda remind me of "Mountain King" era Savatage, which might not be the best thing. Try reamping with the amp set to "louder than fuck" perhaps? You're right with the assesment that they're a little "honky."

I dig the snare & the cymbals. The kick could use a touch more bottom, & the toms just seem a little too dark for my tastes. Maybe some subtractive shelving EQ on the tom mics in the 1k - 500hz & under range would help here.
The bass guitar might use a touch more bass as well. Overall, it's some great stuff, though! For a teaser, it's wonderful. Can't wait to hear the record!
