Shure SM7B vs SM58 (With Audio!)

After reading the comments I was suprised more people couldn't tell the SM7 straight away, the amount of extra detail, clarity and warmth it had was easy for me to hear, and yes, I think it's worth the $250 for studio use.

He removed the microphones windscreens though, sonically that's going to make quite a lot of difference to how each microphone reacts, thus this probably isnt the most accurate of comparisons.

Sm7 definitely felt smoother and slightly less nasal for me though.

Yes there is a difference, but is it really a 250$ difference?... Both sound pretty good because the vocalist is really good. Hmm... Still I'm tempted to buy SM7.

Fuck I hate you Americans.
You couldn't even get a SM-57 for 100 bucks brand new here, let alone an SM-58

i often use a 58 for "heavier" vocals. the sound difference is
minimal and not really appropiate to the 300€ difference in price IMHO.

the wav forms also look very identical, think about it! ;)

got my sm7 for the us-price. I think there is quite some difference in clarity an warmth. I always had to boost higher frequencies with the sm58 and it started to sound nasal.

Ah yes, the prices outside USA. It's 111 (SM58) and 400 (SM7) in a popular German mail order store. It would be a bit more than this in my country... And oh... we're talking euros not dollars.

A huge difference IMO, but I noticed it a lot more the first time I recorded with my sm7b after 1 year using my 58. Was nice that I didn't have to eq a lot my vocals tracks compared to my 58.
