Once more to Ireland, Faithful Reader. The last time we were here was for the melodic death metal outfit For Ruin. With new albums coming from Primordial and Scald, as well as an Arcane Sun re-release, that lovely island will be discussed for some time in metal circles. However, if one were to dig deeper, you might find the self-released EP from Siorai Geimhreadh, Solitude.

The music found herein is reminiscent of the early 1990’s, though lacking much of the mysticism of those classics. Siorai Geimhreadh changes riffs quite easily and effortlessly, though that hardly makes for strong structure. The four songs tend to go on for far too long with material that just does not hold up. Make no mistake, though, Solitude does have some solid material. The title track and 'An Endless Winter' are the strongest songs. 'Solitude' goes from black metal fury to a crawl quite quickly, making an average song into a respectable one.

The production of Solitude is a standard black metal affair, but does not really help the effect. It makes the music sound hollow. The vocals, which are a high pitched shriek reminding one of Burzum, are too high in the mix. These complaints have nothing to do with the music itself, but it does affect the way the album might be heard.

Siorai Geimhreadh has a lot of work to do before they will be a true contender. They have the talent, but we will see if they have the spirit and the will.
