Let it be said that in its early infancy, Blackline had some pretty metal songs.. not hardcore metal, but metal.

Having said that, the following mix is NOT metal. But it does use 100% SSD3 played on Vdrums..

go to www.stevenslatedrums.com
and listen to ANIMAL on the FULL MIX demo section..

I bet that some of us from this forum could easily make a real heavy modern metal mix to promote SSD (if they were given the software), I mean listen to this song by Behindert for example, I am so not worthy for that song :notworthy

i eq'd them to have a nice wispy wash on top of the chorus.. when I left them too thick and they were too heavy sounding for that poppy chorus.. thanks for the comments, given that you've seen us do this live I hope it lived up!

...the sound guy from that night should be beaten...

...but the mix sounds great... There definitely sounds like there is a space about it and i'm digging that...

I'm just not a fan of how thin the cymbals are sounding in the mix... they are missing some of the heavy "ting" that I tend to like about cymbals... That is just personal preference, though.

for this mix I was going for very sizzly and whispy cymbals including the hi hat, i actually compressed the TING out of them with some 1176s... i usually do the same with most OH's from live kits... every once and a while I'll want the cymbals to be a bit bigger and I'll compress them with slower attack and fast release to accentuate the attack.. But for the most part, I like them airy and unobtrusive in pop and rock... even metal I like to keep them out of the way of the massive attacks from kick snare and toms.. like you said, personal preference.

That show you went to had a few audio guys in the audience.. depending on where they were standing, it was a different review... but thats live venues for ya!

Definitely...

as far as the show... clipping... it sounded like someone routed the drums through a metal zone at like full gain and 30% mix... seriously, tell me I'm not the only one that heard it... if that is so, then they need new ears or different jobs...

But yeah, good mix. I'm going to be picking up SSD3 within the next month (hopefully), if/when this next project comes in (they want a bunch of different sounds for the different songs, so I figure I'll pick it up to do this)...
