You know, that mic has actually not been very popular until pretty recently. I know that it's been around for a long time, but for most engineers and producers it's been pretty overlooked. I've said before that I've only seen a few sitting in studio mic closets over the years - and I'm talking about nearly all of the big studios in Los Angeles. Of all the sessions that I've engineered or 2nd'd for, nobody has ever used that mic for anything. For most, the choice between a tube 67 or a SM7 isn't much of a choice at all. I don't believe for one second that the entire "Thriller" album was recorded with the SM7. I worked with Josh Abraham (who's producing the Slayer record) for a couple of days back in the late 90's and we used an 87 then. I really dig what Andy does with the SM7, and Hetfield's vox always sounds great, too.
