title says it, by removing the transformer of a sm57 (just put the body of it in hot water, remove the tranny and wire direct to the xlr connector) you get a scooped high.mid sound, or a beef-boost and upper end shimmer (and a 12db gain drop).
the modded 57 is supposed to sound similar to a sm7, has anyone tried it or compared to the sm7?

sounds strange, i usually dont put my mics in hot water.

only the body (handle), not the capsule.
in that handle there's only the cheapo crappy transformer, that's causing a bass rolloff and cuts the highs, by boiling the handle you can soften the glue and remove the tranny.
i just bought a cheap sm57 copy (thomann) and removed the tranny there, so i have got both, i can use my stock sm57 or take the (empty/direct wired) body of the copy and put it on my shure.
haven't a/b'd them, yet, but i will, as soon as i've a result i'll tell you the difference.

hmm, i could just record music coming from my monitors.......

wait a minute, gotta wait until my lady is awake, befor i cranck them ;)

......
just found a thread in another forum about that.

in case you are interested

ok, here are some files i just created.
i simply put the sm57 (both versions) in front of the driver of an yamaha hs50m, in a distance of about 10cm.
from there into a rme quadmic, into rme multiface, into cubase.
no eq or fx or anything, just normalized.

i recorded only that one speaker, anything else was turned of, so don't expect a great stereo sound or so, it's just about comparison between both versions.

here's a snapshot of firium, wich shows the difference between the modded and the original version, the modded has a little bit more bottom (keep in mind, that the monitors can't project anything below 40hz) and more air.
the high mids are scooped a little bit.

imo the mod in deed removes a bit of the honky tones the sm57 delivers.

i like it.

sounds:

sm57stock
sm57mod

i can imagine, that for snare, kick, vox and some other applications it can come in handy to have both versions.
have fun

I agree...

here's a clip with my modded 57.

57 with xfmr then 57 w/o xfmr then i5

all 57s are not created equally. some have a much smoother mid-top with a milder honk.

Really picked your music for the forum eh?
Did that on purpose ;)
in keiffer's file it's even more obvious, switching from the modded to the stock version really shows that nasal tone of the original (doesn't have to be bad for guitars, but it's there).
(keiffer: they aren't really in the same position in front of the speaker, are they?

The mod certainly makes a difference but saying "sm57 mod = sm7" sounds like bullshit to me.

have never compared to a sm7, that's what i wanted to know from you.

It's meant to go in that direction, and technically it's almost the same (same capsule), but the humbucker and the way the front is designed will definitely make a difference.
but hey, a sm58 has the same capsile as the 57, and still sounds different (in this case due to the different tranny)

I modded an old dead 57 I had laying around, I figured I had nothing to lose since it didnt work anyway. I used it on this song for vox to see how it worked

and this song

seemed to complement her voice quite well

It sounds good, takes eq well and and needs a TON of gain (I had to plug it into an old tube mixer and then into my soundtracs to get a decent level) as far as sounding like an sm7......well maybe. sounded like a less honkey 57 to me

A lot of people have been trying it out since someone made an article this year on it in some magazine, maybe it was TapeOp?

I've heard reviews of people saying it was pretty cool and made the mic more tolerable for things like vocals, but I never heard anyone compare it to an SM7.
