SM57 stock vs. SM57 transformer removed

The SM7 capsule is based on that capsule, but it's not the same. (I'm pretty sure you can get that straight from Shure.)

To my ears the stock SM57 sounded better in these clips.
More defined and articulate, especially for the metal genre.
It's got that upper mid range bite that cuts through nicely.

I think I'd end up trying to EQ the modded one to end up sounding like the unmodded one.

The modded version could be very useful for taming an overly brite amp though, or for a smooth lead sound.

The SM7, the SM57, and the SM58 are all based on the Unidyne III capsule design. The SM7 capsule is not identical to the SM57 or SM58, but it is similar.
