Just picked up an sm7 while im here in vancouver.
I cant use it till i get home to australia but is there anything i should do before using. Remove the caps? shield guard?
What are some small things i can do before i use it to get the most out of it when i get home?

I will only be using it for Vox:rock:

also will i get enough gain from my profire pre's to run this?

EDIT- it says profire pre's have up to 53db input gain. and the sm7 manual says it needs up to 60 for speech applications.
so surely screaming vox will have a high enough output to run it at a good enough level?

yes/no?

Switch on the lowcut and the presence boost, remove the windscreen and use a pop shield instead. Or go with the windscreen and let the vocalist use it as a handheld. It needs alot of gain, but it's not noisy.

lowcut and presence boost?

So your saying for using on a stand i should just get rid of the shield completely and only have a pop filter?
will try then.

Anything else

If you're using it on a stand, take the foam off the mic and use a pop filter. If you are going to have the vocalist keep hold the mic then you should just keep the foam on the mic. For me it works best when I've just let the vocalist hold onto it.

Your profire should provide enough gain. I have been able to use my Digi 003 pres with little problem, ,but it works better when I have used other equally boring pres into a distressor with a 2:1 so that I can cover vocalists inconsistencies and put a tiny bit of make up gain into the equation.

I am getting a pair of APIs before I record again so that should make the mic a lot more fun to record with! I totally agree with the presence boost and the low cut on vocals. But be sure to ditch them when you are recording guitar because it can be nice to have those low frequencies in your tracks, even if you plan on using a high-pass when mixing.

Definitely a higher quality preamp will not hurt the performance you'll be getting from that mic. If your looking for a single preamp to use with that or any other vocal mic be it condenser or what have you, look into the Golden Age Pre-73. It is a Neve 1073 clone and for under $300 you can't beat it. Nice buy.

AndrewPGlover, sick show in Indianapolis last Thursday minus all those technical difficulties haha. I am good friends with and record the band 'The Contortionist' who played second that night. Good luck on the rest of the tour man. btw, do you run a studio on the side from the band? If so, whats the name I'd be interested to check it out.

Love this Mic...

I didnt really have any issues preamp-wise, ran it through my Mbox-2 Mini though it was heavy vocals, no actual singing involved...

For good measure you could try leaving the foam on and using a pop-filter... really reduce those plosives

And agreed on the Low-cut and Presence Boost, this mic does nearly all the work for you if the vocalist is good enough...
