Hey folks,

i just got my firepod last week. We made a quick test just to check that eveything was working good.

We'll start tracking drums this sunday and I have few questions about our snare drum sound.

First, what do you think of this short snare clip sound :

I think it sounds pretty good, but does it lack of something ?

And then, is this an important bleeding of the kit into the snare mic ? :

And here, with the overheads, the phase has been checked :

One SM57 was used, on a peace snare drum. at 11 o clock, at a distance of about 5 centimeters and an angle between 30 and 45°. The head is a evans CS COATED. we added a piece of blue "slime" on the head to eliminate the extra "harmonics" and unwanted resonance. Nt5 for the overheads.

The clips haven't been processed. No EQ, no comp, nothing. I don't know how to pre-mix or mix. I still have to hire someone to do it !

Do you think I can do something to get a better sound. The snare will be sampled, and the sm57 will be mix to the samples with aptrigga.

I think the snare lacks lots of body. Add some around 125-250hz. Also compress it with a slow attack to bring out more of the "ring" ...

... although you said you did stuff to avoid the ring, so maybe you are going for that short "tock" sound.

well, without any muting, it sounded too much "boiinng" to my ears :)

I forgot to mention that no process at all have been applied. It's the "pure" sound.

EDIT : I listened to few snare samples. and it's true that mine lacks a lot of body, air and resonance. I'll try to get a better balance. Only the attack sounds a bit thin.
