On Dragon Ball Z. My housemates are both big fans from childhood, and one has Season 1 (Saiyan saga) on DVD, so I've been watching 'em and being completely drawn in (cheesy dubbing/voice acting notwithstanding, though the writing really isn't that bad, surprisingly enough; there's always a few forehead-slappers, but the majority is genuinely witty/intelligent/emotional dialog that is generally well delivered). I've never been an anime fan AT ALL before this, but I can see this being my gateway drug of sorts. Nerd-dom here I come! (though I've been a sci-fi nut for years, my favorites being ST: DS9 and Babylon 5)

Agree with Kaomao, the original Dragon Ball was funny and original when I was a kid, but Dragon Ball Z is a crap in loop. All the characters have pretty much the same power and every few chapters appears an overpowered dude who can explode mountains with the blink of an eye (literally). But what I hate the most is how people can´t fucking talk, they need to SHOUT every dialog line like if they were chatting with Lemmy Kilmister. Actually, the only anime on this style that I enjoyed watch was Yuyu Hakusho :P

Hey, like I said, I'd never been into any anime before this, and maybe it gets more fighting oriented as the series goes on (I'm only in season 1), but I'm enjoying it so far; good, fun cartoons with IMO really funny/cool concepts and writing (I love their depiction of heaven and its administrators). Naturally, there's the shouting, and the other forced bits of voice acting (cuz you can tell they have to have English stuff filling up where the mouths are moving in the Japanese version), but I think the majority of voice actors do a good job, and there's some really great stuff in there story-wise; don't knock it until you try it!

Yeah the first season is good but seriously watch the original series then you'll know what I mean ;) That dirty old man of the master Roshi is a great character lol.

Since I'm almost 30, back in first 80's I watched another great manga made by Akira Toriyama as well: Dr Slump.
Too bad most of the young dudes never watched that series is really one of the best anime outthere funny as hell ;)

cheers

I'll check it out Mauri, thanks! And to the dudes with an ellipses as their only response, I'm not sure what that means, but I assume it's in some way or another critical of my choice of free-time pursuits - honestly, though, what makes it any different than people who love comic books and comic book movies (Spiderman, Batman, etc.), sci fi, fantasy, or even sports - we all have things we enjoy doing in our free time, and it's utterly pointless to try to debate which is nerdier/cooler (just as pointless as trying to quantify which music is better or worse than others, something I would hope we'd all be very familiar with by now); I just do what makes me happy in my free time, and this now has become one of those things. I kinda expected a little more open-mindedness around here, especially with threads like this one.

Wha......!?

Dude! I just got back into DBZ as well a few months back! What a coincidence. Loved it when I was a kid but since my friend went buying the DVDs I got back into it and I have to say its damn awesome lol. I also got into the PS2 games and love em!

Nerd-dom here I come!
I'm with you bro!

I don't like anime though. The thing with DBZ is that it had balls and character. It's got its brutal bits, its comical bits and its emotional bits so its a winner.
Still need to watch Buu Saga onwards so I'm waiting for my mate to get it on DVD.
