Well if it's not going through post, then you don't have a hard drive problem, you have a MB problem. If you have a HD problem, it will go through post but stall at trying to boot your OS.
So if you are getting an error about no HD connected, I'm pretty sure you made it through POST

all these threads about failed hard drives are a prime example of why you should have a 1:1 backup of your OS drive, or at the very least a folder of all your important stuff that you don't want to lose
