so people, any new bands on the scene worth mentioning?

Depends on what you like. I happen to be a HUGE power metal fan, so I can toss a few of them out there for you... Check out a few of these bands:

-Lost Horizon: Their first album at first seemed a tad Manowar, but they really have a killer sound. And they have a couple songs that just made the hair on the back of my head stand up.

-DragonForce: Super-fast paced power metal, with some great melodies, and interesting layered vocals in places. Very up-beat sounding stuff in places...

-Dream Evil: I know, I know, they're not really all that new, right? FUCK OFF, they RULE! ;) Snowy Shaw, from King Diamond/Mercyful Fate is in this, and the music is just standard ass-kickin' metal.

-Angel Dust: Power metal with a more modern feel than their contemporaries...

A good idea, also, is to check out the Century Media and Nuclear Blast websites. These labels have TONS of new, kick ass, bands. I'd also recommend trying out the "Identity" albums that Century makes every once in awhile. For $5, you get like 10-12 songs of a plethora of bands on the label.

if you can them new, the haunted are arguably one of the best new thrash metal bands out there

The Haunted kick ass!!!
I also recommend Seven Witches (w/ Joey Vera and James Rivera), Evergrey, Tomahawk (Mike Patton's new band)...

If you like modern hard core and even if you don't I highly recomend
Subzero: happyness without peace
or Blood For Bloods latest release :white trash anthems.

Instead I loking for new bands, I find myself going backwards for bands. Im currently diggin Stuck Mojo, Alice in Chains and Yngwie Malmsteen. Bands that got attention when I was too young to know about.

Soilwork: part of the "Swedish Melodic Death Metal" scene, but I think they have a lot to do with thrash Natural Born Chaos was one of my favourite albums of last year and the new one Figure Number Five is possibly even better.

Raging Speehorn: British band, bellowed dual vocals Sabbathesque speeded up grinding riffs. Like being punched in the face by a fat drunk, which is somewhat appropriate. I dunno if you'll be able to get hold of them but their last album, "we WIll Be Dead Tommorrow" is brilliant IMO.

There are some kick-ass bands that have been around for awhile that perhaps you may not have heard yet... Such as Stratovarius (THE premier current power metal band), Gamma Ray (Kai Hansen of Helloween's current band), Primal Fear (I recommend these guys to ANYONE that even remotely like Judas Priest), Therion (The older albums have more of a death feel, but the last 4-5 are like a cross between opera/classical & metal... Very cool), Iced Earth (Start with either "The Dark Saga," which is about Spawn, or "Something Wicked This Way Comes." They'll remind you of a younger Maiden), Sonata Arctica (Everyone I've had listen to their "Silence" album has loved it, even non-metal music fans), etc.

Also, if you dig this kind of metal, check out the first three Fates Warning albums, (Night On Bröcken, The Spectre Within, & Awaken The Guardian). The Awaken The Guardian album is, IMO, one of the BEST metal LPs of all time...

As for death metal:
Vital Remains(newest album slays all. Brutal as hell death metal, but with harmonized, classical leads. You have to hear it to believe it. It's called Dechristianize)
God Dethroned(new album Into the Lungs of Hell is out. 2 discs for the price of 1. Can't beat that.)

Hey Sgt.D.! You like euro-clone metal??

Such as Stratovarius (THE premier current power metal band), Gamma Ray (Kai Hansen of Helloween's current band), Primal Fear (I recommend these guys to ANYONE that even remotely like Judas Priest), Sonata Arctica (Everyone I've had listen to their "Silence" album has loved it, even non-metal music fans), etc.

All these bands you mentioned are Helloween/Blind Guardian clones - 0 originality.

You should probably check out some good old-fashioned american power/speed metal (that doesn't have gaysounding-superhappy-spedup choruses like euro-clones) like: Jag Panzer - featuring probably two of the best less-known musicians in metal: Harry "The Tyrant" Conklin on vocals and Chris Broderick on lead guitar - these guys just rip!!!; Helstar - excellent speed/power metal from the 80's feat. James Rivera a.k.a. "Mexican Dio", Destiny's End, Cauldron Born, Iced Earth (I agree with you on that one! :) ), Nevermore ... and so forth...

"Hey Sgt.D.! You like euro-clone metal??

I can see you thinking that Gamma Ray are Helloween clones, after all, the Kai Hansen thing, but Sonata Arctica??? I disagree. With the rest, they **DO** have that influence, which is slightly obvious, but they're not "clones." (Certainly NOT Therion... I can't think of any band that sounds like that! Same w/Fates...)

BTW, the other bands you mentioned (Nevermore, Destiny's End, Helstar, Jag Panzer, etc.) do, in fact, kick ass. But even with some of them, their influences shine quite bright. I hear a shitload of Maiden in Jag Panzer...

BTW, Primal Fear aren't Helloween clones, they're Priest clones! ;)
