Decided to sample all my cymbals the other day. Here's a sample of what they sound like (programmed), and that same MIDI through IMO the best Slate hats.

Still not 100% realistic but in the mix I don't think you'd tell a difference. Unfortunately I don't have Kontakt so unless someone who DOES own it wants to make all the instruments (for a % of any profits), these would just be the .wav's. Anyone interested?

i think the problematic part of programmed hihats is really audible on the last bit (in both slates and yours) - the machine gun thing.

i think that happens because our ears dont like repeated samples too close (for example 5 different samples repeated 4 times in a time-window of 2 seconds, we can actually
hear the same samples being repeated). this doesnt really matter for slower stuff, but the fast stuff... i dont know.

maybe the problem is also how the room reacts to fast playing. even if you hit 2 notes, in reality the first note will have a slight overlapping decay on the 2nd note.
but kontakt etc. they get cut off (right?).

but overall - cool soudns!

those open close hihat variation things are the hardest thing to do with samples
i've never managed to get that stuff sound real so i tend to avoid it

hey but im really looking forward to those samples

I didn't really think that one was too bad? But thinking back I don't think there are any velocity changes at all there, so that's easily remedied. I used Drumagog for these, it doesn't cut off the decay (apTrigga does unfortunately, not sure about Trigger or Kontakt).

When I do this in in battery, I can set it to overlap voices, so in cymbals I have it overlap 2-3 times so it has the room decay vibe.
