Absolutely fascinating read. I don't know if I would have the patience to record this way personally but if it gets the results you are after then more power.
 
I haven't read all this thread, but I think the guy who started this thread has confused mixing with arranging and editing. Playing to a click and mapping the hits to line up with the grid is arranging not mixing.
I see mixing as getting a good balance between the instruments
Personally whilst the approach of making every bar is perfect and aligned to the grid it can be fatiguing but not only that it can suck the energy out of a performance.
 
I hate modern metal production, everything sounds like it's been lovingly sheened, it's treated and presented like pop music.
